Two sizzling tales by two very twisted sisters…

Heart of the Jaguar by Myla Jackson

When jaguar shifter Reme Denux stumbles into his ex-girlfriend’s palm reading parlor in the French Quarter of New Orleans, he’s fuzzy about how he got there. The last thing he remembered was a drink at a bar and having another man’s dark, sensuous dream.

As soon as Reme enters her building, Sybille can sense the black magic haze hanging over the man she still loves. With the full moon on the rise, she has to do something to save him from a death-swapping hex or lose him forever. With the help of a voodoo priestess, Sybille and Reme weather the moon’s supremacy and the soul-stealing storm, forging a bond of lust and love, neither has the strength to resist.

She’s All That by Delilah Devlin

Librarian by day, Melanie Bradshaw, is driven to desperation by her torrid dreams. However, when she acts on her desires, things go horribly wrong and she witnesses the murder of an overly amorous lounge lizard. With the body disintegrating before her eyes, who’s going to believe her?

When Detective Moses Brown gets the latest Full Moon case, he’s hoping it’s no more than another crazy looking for attention—until he meets the delectable librarian. Melanie took a walk on the wild side straight into vampire territory. They know her and now she’s not safe. Until he can find out why, he’s going to stick to her like glue. If his own attraction gets between him and his good intentions, he’ll just grit his teeth and do his best to ignore it.

But pretty little Melanie has designs on his body. How’s a brother to resist?

MOONSTRUCK (HEART OF THE JAGUAR)

by Myla Jackson (Delilah's Sister)

Heat radiated throughout his body as Reme struggled to open his eyes. The thrum of drums beat against the base of his skull, placing pressure on his spine, rendering his body inert, temporarily paralyzed. He couldn't move, couldn't rise from ground, couldn't force air past his vocal cords to shout out for help.

In the darkness, a low steady chant throbbed against his ears. His inner cat squalled, fighting to free him from bindings without substance. Fear, anger and trepidation spiked the hair on the back of his neck.

The cloying fragrance of burning incense and candles surrounded him, the heat and humidity of the room intensifying until sweat dripped down his forehead into his eyes, stinging.

He tried to focus, tried to move his hands, but none of his muscles cooperated. He lay completely still, as though death had claimed a part of his body.

Steadily beating drums rumbled against his ear, the rhythm increasing in tempo and volume. A monotonous chant swelled to fill the air around him, pounding against his senses. Something cool slithered across his skin, coiling around his throat and across his chest.

Reme wanted to strike out, to bellow and yell, to chase away the darkness and the invisible lashes holding him down, keeping him from moving even the muscles of his eyelids.

Release me! he shouted. His cry didn't reach any ears, even his own.

A dark, empty force pressed against him, the pressure stealing the air from his lungs, pushing at him from outside and inside until he thought his ribs and head might explode. The rotting stench of death filled his nostrils, overwhelming his mind with shadows and evil, ramming into his soul in an effort to oust his essence from his body.

Reme fought to keep the force from sucking the life out of him, refusing to give in to the undulating shadows, twisting and swirling inside his head, reeking of malevolence, and an evil so wicked and powerful, if allowed to, would steal his very spirit.

Hands slid across his naked chest, fingers touching, feeling, mesmerizing in their smooth and urgent contact. Breasts pressed against his chest, the naked tips poking him with hardened nubbins. A woman's body straddled him, her hair drifting across his face and neck, her pussy pressing against his cock, making him jerk to attention and harden. She leaned close, her breath warming his ear. "Come to me, gros-bon-ange. Rise again."

What kind of dream was this that he couldn't move, couldn't touch the body offered? Every part of his anatomy paralyzed, except his cock. Why couldn't he awaken?

Reme summoned his inner cat, urging it to rise above his human form and shift into the animal he knew he could be. Perhaps then he would awaken from this endless, sinister nightmare.

The woman atop him moved, taking him into her, sliding down to sheathe his cock with her heated channel. She rose and fell over him, her fingertips tweaking his nipples, pinching harder until pain made him want to cry out. But he couldn't.

She rocked, up and down, her toned thighs pressing into him with each thrust.

Again, a cool, thick form slithered across him, sliding between his torso and the woman's breasts. The cool scales, inching across his skin, made him shiver inside yet did nothing to chill his heated skin.

The woman tensed, her body lowering over his, her mouth hovering above his lips. "Come to me, gros-bon-ange, come to me, my Adrienne."

Adrienne?

I'm not Adrienne, he tried to say, I'm Reme. Nothing came out, his lips didn't move. Could he be occupying another man's dream?

Darkness sucked at his feet, tugging at his arms and legs, threatening to pull him down, drown him in a sea of faceless people filled with anguish and suffering. He swam to the surface, only to be dragged under again.

Wake up, Reme. Wake up!

His chest ached with longing, his body cried out to be free, his voice remained silent, useless, lifeless.

He sank into a deep, fathomless pit, its bottom forgotten, the darkness so black it absorbed every bit of light within until Reme dissolved into unconsciousness.

Snippet Saturday - CAT SCRATCH FEVER

"Filled with steamy sex, frustration and anguish, Cat Scratch Fever was a real winner!"

Tom Black prowled the streets, lurking in the shadows of the alleys, watching over the citizens and patrons of Hell's Kitchen, deep in the heart of Manhattan. Tangy flavors of Chinese, French, Thai and Greek food filled the air around him, mingling with car exhaust and cigarette smoke. Couples strolled hand in hand, laughing and talking, their voices hushed in the late-night air, the sounds of honking horns filling the gaps of silence in their conversations. In this sprawling, eclectic section of New York City, Saturday night appeared to be on its way to being normal and uneventful. But then the clock had only just struck midnight. All the Cinderellas had yet to head home. All the monsters of darkness had yet to show their ugly faces.

Although his pride had won the right to live, work and play in this part of the city, he didn't take anything for granted. Encroachers infiltrated their territory at least once a week, if not more often. Usually on busy nights like tonight. To keep the streets and tourists who ventured out at night safe, he and his people took turns patrolling the avenues, searching for rogues bent on stirring up trouble.

He scented her before he saw her, headed home from her job as a waitress at the Singing Java shop around the corner from where he stood. Her high heels tapped against the pavement, echoing off the brick and concrete buildings. She walked this route every night alone. Her pale blonde hair hung straight down her back like a curtain of silk, her ivory skin appeared almost ethereal in the light from the street lamps.

Her songs haunted his nights as she sat on the fire escape landing a floor below his apartment, plucking the strings of her guitar, her voice sweet and so pure against the grunge of the city. Every time she sang, his heart swelled with yearning for what he couldn't have. A normal life with a beautiful woman by his side. A human like Lilly. As she drew nearer, his groin tightened, the animal filling him, forcing blood to flow in a heaving rush south to fill his cock. He fought the urge to follow and stake his claim on her, to mark her as his. But Lilly was forbidden fruit to be admired for her beauty but not tasted.

Forbidden Fruit. That was Lilly and he'd do best remember that. His oil wouldn't mix with her water, no matter how sweet she was, or how pure her songs and laughter. Forget about how hard he got, or how much he wanted to plunge into her, milking the cream of her womb, making her cry out for him.

As she passed by, her gaze swung toward the shadowy alley where he stood, leaning against the side of a building.

Had he moved to draw her attention? Could she sense his need or smell his desire? His breath caught in his throat as he held steady, willing his heart rate to level, and his cock not to strain so hard against his jeans. If she came toward him, he doubted he could keep from rubbing up against her, or stop his hands from reaching out to hold her.

Her attention shifted to the street corner and she turned, disappearing out of sight.

Tom sucked a harsh breath between his teeth, filling his lungs with enough air to feed his starving brain cells. Fuck. He had it bad for his neighbor and he couldn't-no, shouldn't-do anything about it. She wasn't his type, much more…she wasn't his species.

But that didn't stop him from wanting her and imagining what a life with Lilly would be like. There would be fights over the remote control and what movie they'd watch. There would be nights sitting on the fire escape landing, watching the cars pass, just holding her hand and later, they'd lie in their bed, naked, exploring every inch of each other…

A scream penetrated his fantasy, slicing through the normal sounds of horns honking and people talking, sending adrenaline pumping through Tom's veins. What scared him was the fact the scream came from the direction Lilly had disappeared.

He leaped from the shadows and raced to the end of the street. When he turned at the corner, he couldn't see Lilly anywhere among the pedestrians walking along the sidewalks.

Partygoers only briefly looked around for the source of the woman's scream, before they hurried along their way, anxious to get off the street, out of perceived, yet unseen danger.

Where the fuck had she gone? For a brief moment, he closed his eyes and lifted his sensitive nose to the sky. He could smell the soft scent of her skin, the delicate fragrance of her hair. His eyes opened and he headed for the dark alley halfway down the street.

"Please, go away. Leave me alone." Her voice carried in the humid night air, bouncing off the tall sides of the buildings. "Please, someone help me," she cried.

Tom ground to a halt at the end of the alley, keeping to the shadows while shedding first his jeans and then his shirt. A woman gasped and hurried past. He barely noted her affronted comment, "Freak."

"Nice kitties. Please don't hurt me." Lilly stood with her back to him, surrounded by three man-sized cats with viciously long teeth bared at her. "You really don't want me for dinner. Someone at the zoo needs to be fired." These last words she said through gritted teeth.

Up until now, the rogue cougars had only darted in and out of sight. The unwritten law of the shifter kingdom was to leave the humans in ignorant bliss of their existence. These cougars crossed the lines too many times in the past few weeks and all within Hell's Kitchen territory. Now they threatened Lilly.

Julie is attacked by a vampire and turned into one of the living dead. With her life over, she’s still unwilling to end her sex life. But how do you tell your boyfriend you’re dead and one of the bad guys he’s sworn to destroy?

Roger Decker dared to love again after his lying, cheating ex-wife fooled around on him left him for another guy. The incredibly honest, sweet and sexy Julie is the only woman who’s been able to sneak beneath his armor and resuscitate his heart. Now, when he finally has the time off to tell her how he feels, weird things happen. Strange creatures appear in the night, targeting his newfound love. Does his sweet and loveable Julie have a dark side? Is she like every other woman and lying to him? And why does she totally avoid him during the daytime?

EXCERPT

Julie slipped out into the hallway and turned toward the nurses station for her next assignment. Before she could take two steps, her friend Kim snagged her by the elbow and marched her toward the supply closet. “What? Where are you taking me?”

“Shut up. You’ll thank me later.” Kim opened the closet door and shoved her inside, closing the door behind her.

The closet was dark and filled with the acrid scent of disinfectant floor cleaners and old mops. Julie fumbled in the dark for the doorknob. When she found it, she twisted the handle and pulled. It didn’t budge. “What’s the deal?”

“I’m the deal.” A low sexy voice breathed against the back of her neck.

Her muscles bunched and then relaxed when she realized who was behind her. With a sigh, she leaned back against a solid chest, inhaling the scent of musky cologne and male.

Roger. The man of her dreams. The man destined to stay in her dreams. Other than the stolen kisses in the emergency room hallway, she’d done little else but fantasize about this man. How she’d love to do a lot more.

His breath stirred the hairs that had fallen loose from the neat ponytail she’d started the night with. Arms circled around her middle, rising beneath her breasts.

“Pervert,” she whispered and pressed her bottom against the hard ridge behind his uniform trousers. While his hands slipped beneath her scrub shirt and lacy bra, she reached around behind her to cup his ass. God, how she wanted him. “You’re going to get me fired.”

“Then we’ll have time to do more of this.” His tongue curled around her earlobe and he sucked it into his mouth, nibbling gently with his teeth.

“Um, perhaps I could live on sex alone?” She turned in his arms. “Who needs food or a roof over my head, when I can have all this?”

“Now you’re thinking.”

“Yeah, but it’s time to quit thinking and start...” she pressed her lips to his, cutting off further conversation. Her time was short. She’d better make good use of it.

He pushed her bra up over her breasts and tweaked her nipples between his thumb and forefingers. Pressing his cheek against her hair, he inhaled. “You smell like heaven.”

She laughed. “How can you smell anything over the disinfectant and dirty mops?”

“I can, when I'm this close.” He nudged a knee between her legs, rubbing his thigh against her cunt.

When his leg touched her there, all the air whooshed out of her lungs and she clung to him.

A hand rose to cup her face in the darkness, his lips descending to claim hers in a long scorching kiss. While his tongue toyed and dueled with hers, blunt-tipped fingers slid once more beneath her shirt.

She tugged the buttons open on his uniform to comb her fingers through his chest hairs, except a cotton t-shirt stood in the way. Julie plucked at it. “You have too many clothes on.” Short of pulling his shirt and t-shirt from his waistband she had to content herself with sliding her fingers between his uniform and the t-shirt. When she found the hard little knots of his nipples beneath the soft cotton, she tweaked.

The hard ridge of his cock rocked against her belly. “Your clothes are much more accessible to play.” He pushed his hands beneath the elastic waistband of her scrubs and burrowed into the silky bikini underwear to the furry mound at the juncture of her thighs.

“I can't believe we're doing this in a janitor's closet.” Despite her words, her legs spread to give him more maneuvering room.

“I'd rather have you in my bed.” With his index finger, he parted the thick folds and stroked the cleft between.

Julie moaned, her back arching, pressing her into his hand. “What if someone comes?” she gasped.

“What if you come?” He paused, his fingers cupping her sex lightly. “Do you want me to stop?”

“Are you kidding?” She grabbed his arm and pushed him deeper. “If you stop now, I'll die.”

Sunday Report Card

This past week was a combination of vacation in Colorado snow skiing and getting some edits done.I skiied two days, got peely skin from wind and sun burn, but I'm happy to say I edited a full novel I hope to publish straight to Kindle, I did the first round of copy edits for the latest novella in my Bound and Tied Series: River Bound, and I did copy edits on my newest novella SEX ED. That was all in Colorado and on the trip home! Saturday and Sunday I spent getting the Roses Colored Glasses Quarterly Newsletter up and running, updated my Myla Jackson website, updated an artist's website, made 3 book covers for upcoming books that will go straight to Kindle and studied the how-to's of formatting and submitting to Kindle. A very busy weekend and no new pages.

That's what I have on my plate for this week along with a visit to Shreveport, LA for the NOLA Written in the Stars Conference. Yippee! I have pages to complete before I can go. Wish me luck!

Vacation in Colorado

On my 5th day of vacation  in Winterpark, Colorado. The sun has shone everyday, the mountain is a vision in white, I completed revisions on two works and I'm working on revisions of another. I spent my first couple days working, staring out at the ski slopes. These last couple days I'm skiing! Woot! I've discovered this is the best time of the year to go skiing. The lines at the lifts are short, the slopes aren't crowded and I can take the entire width traversing and turning. Yay! I don't know why we always insisted on going at Christmas and Spring Break. Oh yeah...kids were in school any other time. This is a first for my husband and me since our first ski trip 20 years ago. It's sad to see your kids grow up and leave, but there are benefits!

Would love to hear from you about your favorite winter vacations.

The View from my Window

18 inches of the white stuff
Yesterday was a wild day of snow, snow and more snow. You folks up north would say, so what! In the south, snow means no school, no work, no driving! We have limited capabilities for snow removal which is a big business in the north. Not so in the south. We may only get 2 days of snow each year. Not worth investing in snow removal equipment. So when it snows, it's a BIG DEAL. But it's also a wonderful change from just dreary gray skies. The blanket of white spread out as far as the eye can see is beautiful if you don't have to look at if for 6 months out of the year. It's a chance to play in the white stuff without getting tired of it and when the sun shines down on it like it is now, it's blindingly beautiful. Sigh...Supposed to start melting tomorrow. I thought I'd dedicate this blog to the snow today.

Cowgirl KC Matheson is fresh out of ideas. Thanks to her father's unlucky poker hand, her family is about to lose their ranch. Desperate to entice the winner to let her family keep their home, KC appeals to a sensual stranger, Rosalyn, to help awaken her inner vixen. A vixen with the womanly skills to make a deal with the devil.
Sent to fetch a companion for his partner's pregnant wife, miner Jake Thompson never thought luck could change this fast. First, his royal flush lands him a ranch. Then a punch in the face. Now the rancher's daughter, a woman with a body made for sin, is trying to seduce him into giving up his winnings. Jake has a better idea: her for the ranch. And to ensure she makes good on the bargain, there's a catch-she has to keep his interest, or the deal is off.

The three set off on the two-day trek to Jake's claim, experiencing wondrous delights in the cool mountain air. Then reality sets in, leaving Jake saddled with a mail-order bride, a deflowered virgin, and an unexpected desire to make things right with KC…forever.

Excerpt:

Fall 1860

Jake Thompson's heart thumped hard as he fought to remain calm and outwardly unaffected by the cards in his hand. The pot had grown to almost five hundred dollars' worth of gold. Zachariah Braun had thrown in his hand, as had the toothless miner who'd lost his entire bag of gold in this round of poker. Which left the cattleman.

A straight flush. Nothing could beat a straight flush but a royal flush, and the chances the cattleman had a royal flush were slim to none. He also knew the cattleman had just sold his herd of steers to the mining camp and was flush with funds, most of which already lay on the table. Just how much more he had on him, Jake didn't know, but he was about to find out.

Jake tossed in his last bag of gold nuggets. He wasn't too worried about losing it. There was more gold where that came from at the claim he and Zach owned two days' ride to the north.

From the sweat on the cattleman's face, he was bettin' more than he could afford. "I'll see you and raise you my ranch."

On the outside, Jake kept his face poker straight. On the inside, he cringed for the cattleman. Hadn't he seen the older man earlier with his young son, herding the cattle to the stockyards? A wad of guilt collected in Jake's gut. If he won-and with the hand he had he would-this man would have to go back to his son and tell him he'd not only lost their earnings from the cattle, he'd lost the ranch and any means he had of raising more cash.

"Not sure I want a ranch." Jake lifted his glass of whiskey and sipped. With his entire attention focused on his hand and the man across the table from him, he barely noticed the fire burning its way down his throat.

"Six hundred acres of prime land in the San Luis Valley. It's worth at least four hundred dollars, without the cattle. Not to mention the house I built myself."

"Probably made of logs." Jake's lips twisted. "Never much cared for log cabins, nor have I had a hankerin' for ranchin' cattle."

The cattleman stared down at his hand and pulled at his shirt, loosening the bolo tie at his throat. "I'll throw in fifty breedin' heifers and my prize Herford bull. The only one in the state."

Jake wanted the other man to throw in his hand, not offer more of his livelihood. He glanced over at Zach, whose dark countenance displayed his displeasure.

His friend shrugged. "Look, mister, it's just a game. No use bettin' your home on it."

The older man frowned. "Are you gonna play or flap yer jaws?"

With a shrug, Jake laid his cards face up on the table. If the man wanted to bet his life on a game of poker, who was he to deny him the right?

As Jake moved his hands so that the cattleman could see his cards, he kept a close eye on the guns around the table. As much as was at stake, someone might try to shoot him and relieve him of his newfound wealth.

Zach's face split in a grin. "Straight flush. And here I was thinkin' you were bluffin'."

The cattleman blanched, threw his cards on the table and stood so fast his chair toppled over backward, crashing to the wooden floor.

"Four kings." Zach clapped Jake on his back. "Good hand. But not good enough. Guess my buddy Jake will be movin' south to tend to a ranch."

"You cheated." The old man's face had gone from deathly white to flaming red, and he reached for his gun.

Jake sprang to his feet and drew his gun before the older man's pistol left his holster. "I got no use for name-callin'. I won the hand fair and square."

The toothless miner nodded. "That's the way I see'd it."

The cattleman stared at the men, his gaze shifting to the table and the pile of winnings which included the IOU for his ranch. He opened his mouth to say something, his hand still on the grip of his pistol, his body tense. A long, silent moment passed.

Jake stood his ground, his gun pointed at the cattleman.

After what felt like a winter season on the mountain, the old man's hands dropped to his sides, he spun on his worn, dirty boots and walked out of the saloon.

Jake let out the breath he'd been holding and tucked his pistol back in his holster.

"Reckon I was gonna break a sweat on that one."

"I wonder if the old man has a wife and more kids back at the ranch. Speakin' of which, we need to be headin' back to the claim. I don't like leaving Honor there for this long, what with her expectin' so soon. Will have been a week by the time we get back.

"Damned companion Honor sent for shoulda been here by now."

"You go on. Reckon I could stay a couple extra days. Got all this loot to spend. Might as well find me someone to help spend it all." Jake grinned. "Now that you've made an honest woman of Honor, I can't be hornin' in on you two anyway."

"You know you're not hornin' in."

"Still, with a kid comin'…" Jake shrugged. "Besides, I've got to figure out what to do with a ranch before I head back."

Zach shook his head. "That man had no business putting his ranch up in a game of poker. Saw his son earlier. Kinda young and skinny. I didn't win the ranch and I'm already feeling sorry for the boy."

"Since when did you give a rat's ass about someone else's kids?"

"Since I'm gonna be a father."

Jake sighed. "I'm feelin' a might guilty myself. I'll make the man sweat a day or two to teach him a lesson. What would I do with a ranch anyway?"

"You were raised on a ranch. You'd do just fine."

"I'm the joint owner of the Lucky Lady mine now. I don't have time to go pokin' cows."

"Suit yerself and stay. However, I will take you up on that offer to hit the trail." Zach slapped Jake on the back. "I better get some shut-eye. I can make it in a day if I start real early."

"Be careful. Damned claim jumpers just as soon see you dead and relieve you of that sack of flour and beans you'll be carrying."

"Same to you, brother. Sure you don't need help getting Honor's companion back up the mountain?"

"As long as she can ride a mule, I'm sure I'll do just fine. Give Honor my love and let her know I'll be there with her hired help as soon as she arrives."

"Honor will be glad of another woman to talk to and help her through the birthin'. Gotta say I'm right happy she's hirin' her. Can't imagine being on the other end of birthin'."

Zach shuddered. "Maybe we'll get lucky and she'll be pretty."

Jake's eyes narrowed. "The woman is just a companion for Honor, right?"

"Don't know what yer askin'."

"She didn't up and send for one of those mail-order brides, now did she?"

Zach's gaze shifted left, away from Jake.

Uh-oh. Zach was a straight shooter. If he couldn't make eye contact, he was fixin' to lie.

"Nope. She just sent for someone to help her through the birthin'."

Jake glared at Zach. "If that woman comes down off the stage tomorrow and tells me she's come for a wedding, I'll shove her right back up on the stage and send her back to where she came from."

"No need. She's really only coming to help Honor. Honest." Zach held up his right hand as if swearing an oath. "Trust me."

"Trust you? Ha! I've seen the way you and Honor had your heads together, whisperin' like a couple of thieves."

"Just talking about the baby. That's all." Zach crossed his arms over his chest. "Now can I trust you to bring Honor's companion out to her, or do I stay and do the job myself?"

"I'll bring her. But I won't be marryin' no mail-order bride." Jake shoved the pouches of gold, coins and the IOU into the pockets of his dungarees. "She's probably horse-faced and missing a few teeth. I'm holding out for better."

"Someone like Honor?"

Jake's chest ached. He knew Honor and Zach were meant for each other, but Honor was a beauty and what the three of them had shared had been special. "Damn right, I'm holdin' out for someone like Honor."

"You did what?" Katherine Carolina Matheson paced the narrow floor of her father's room in the Golden Nugget Hotel, the only hotel in the mining town of Idaho Springs.

"I'm sorry, KC. I just knew I'd win." Her father's speech slurred, the lines in his leathery tanned face deep, the shadows beneath his eyes more pronounced than ever."I had four kings." His voice caught and he dropped onto the bed. "Four kings."

"But you bet the ranch, Pa." She knelt on the floor in front of him, her long blonde hair hanging down the middle of her back in a thick braid. She always wore it up in her hat, hiding the fact that she was a woman. Her mother never ceased to remind her that she should be wearing a dress, not men's trousers. But her parents only managed to beget girls. Who else would help drive the herd of cattle from the San Luis Valley to Idaho Springs? Her father couldn't do it by himself, and he couldn't afford many hired hands.

And they needed the gold to purchase supplies sufficient to see them through the harsh Rocky Mountain winters.

Without the money they'd made on the sale of the cattle, they didn't stand a chance. Hell, they didn't even have the ranch. Where would they go? What would her mother and her six little sisters do to survive?

"Oh, KC, I can't face them. I can't bear to see the disappointment in your mother's eyes." Her father slumped forward and would have fallen flat on his face if KC hadn't been there to catch him.

"Pa, you can't talk like that. Ma will find it in her heart to forgive you. She always does…" As KC eased her father back against the bed, she sighed. He'd passed out in an alcohol-induced stupor.

KC pulled his boots off and folded the blanket over him, her mind churning over the news he'd delivered before he'd fainted.

KC left her father and went next door where she'd packed her saddlebag, ready to leave for home in the morning. If she could even get her father up. They couldn't stay another night in Idaho Springs without money to pay the hotelier.

KC shoved her hair up and plunked her dusty cowboy hat on her head. She had to find the man who'd cheated her father out of everything he owned and either talk him into returning it or kill him and take it.

She made her way down the stairs and past the front desk of the hotel without making eye contact with anyone along the way. No use letting the entire mining town know she was anything other than the boy she portrayed. If her mother hadn't put her foot down, KC would have cut every inch of her waist-long hair off to avoid being noticed as a woman. She'd even wrapped sheets of cotton around her breasts to keep her chest from pokin' out.

When she opened the door to the hotel, a woman stepped through, her royal blue traveling dress a stark contrast to the gray of dirty, dingy clothing every miner in Idaho Springs wore. Her black hair was pulled up with little ringlets spilling down her back, a smart hat perched on the side of her head with a fluffy feather curled over the side.

A twinge of envy slid beneath KC's skin for the first time in her life. She'd never had anything that pretty, nor would she have much use for it on the ranch. Couldn't ride a horse in that getup. Her lips pressed together and she pushed past the woman without an excuse me or by-your-leave.

She didn't have any trouble crossing the street to the saloon in the dark. With a deep breath, she slipped in the front, hiding in the shadows, keeping her back to the wall.

Two men stood at the bar, both ruggedly handsome, one tall and dark, the other not so tall, with reddish-brown hair hanging loose down around his shoulders. The black-haired man clapped the other man on the back. "Well how 'bout that, Jake. I still can't believe you won that hand. I could swear you were bluffin'."

The man called Jake grinned and held up his mug, sloshing beer over the side. "Guess today was my lucky day." He turned to the patrons of the crowded saloon and yelled, "This round's on me."

As a rush of miners stormed the bar, all talking and laughing at once, KC stood in a dark corner, her anger building with each breath she took. If she'd brought her gun, she'd plug a hole in the man's thieving head. How dare he spend her daddy's money on drinks for a bar full of rowdy miners?

The man called Jake was the one who'd stolen everything they owned. She had to fight the urge to stomp across the dirt floor and pound her fist into his face, no matter how much bigger he was than her.

She fought it, but the urge won. With all the strength and determination of a cornered polecat, she marched over the barroom floor, pushed her way through the crowd of miners until she stood face-to-face with the man who'd ruined her father.

The thief had the gall to look down at her and grin. "Boy, are you even old enough to drink?"

Heat boiled up her neck and shot through her head like a steam kettle exploding. Before rational thought could return, she punched him as hard as she could in the face. "That's for stealing everything we own from my father." She punched him again. "And that's for…for…" the steam seeped out as pain shot into her knuckles, "…for making my hand hurt." Tears welled in her eyes and she fled.

The crowd behind her roared with laughter, driving the pain straight into her heart. Damn him! Damn him to hell!

Not only had she let her anger get the better of her, her hand hurt so badly she thought maybe she'd broken it. Her mother's gentle voice echoed in her head. It's much easier to attract flies with honey. And she'd gone and punched the galoot, ruining any chance she had of convincing him to return the IOU for the ranch. If she wanted this man to give back what was rightfully theirs, she'd have to come up with a better plan.

Sunday Report Card

This week I wrote 63 pages for my latest Harlequin under my pen name Elle James. I'm on deadline to complete this one by Feb 1.  Have to make mega pages this coming week in less than 4 days as I head out of town to Jackson, Mississippi for a Plotting Bootcamp my sister, Delilah Devlin and I will conduct. I worked last weekend on putting together workbooks for the bootcamp and that pretty much took all weekend.

I've also worked on my book I'm writing for straight Kindle. I only added a page, but reviewed and submitted the 1st chapter for critique. I'm excited about the story. It'll be fun to write.

Still need to write the next in my Ellora's Cave vampire series Body Snatchers. I'm behind on that one. No word yet on Bound & Tied Book 3: River Bound. Sure hope my editor at Samhain likes it. If she does it'll probably be late summer before it is released. And I so wanted Rosalyn's story out soon after Duty Bound. Ah well, more anticipation. I better get to work on the next in that series.

Thinking about running a contest to build a free read on my blog. More later on that. Gotta get some promotion done today for my release on Tuesday.  Yay Duty Bound releases in two days! It's Jake's story and he deserves his happiness. Boy will he get it!

Come see me soon!

Revving up for the new year!

It's January, the month for beginnings. I feel like I just climbed on my motorcycle (no, I don't own one) and I'm ready to roar into the new year. This is the time when we wipe our slates clean and start fresh. All the regrets of tasks unfinished from the previous year have been lamented and filed away.

This year, I'm making a resolution to make no resolutions. Wow, fail on that one. If I lose weight...great! If not, too bad. I have my writing, my deadlines and a few trips planned for the year. The first of which is one with my sister, Delilah Devlin, to Jackson, Mississippi to lead a Plotting Bootcamp for the writer's group there. Should be fun!

So I'm on the cycle, I'm revving my engines and I'm off!

I leave you  with a sexy motorcycle rider for you to enjoy.

My Sister's Book is out!

Ravished by a Viking by Delilah Devlin

“Clash of cultures, clash of myths, clash of powerful personalities…how many authors can bring out on paper the excitement and more-than-willing suspension of disbelief that old fashioned adventure stories once brought us?…a wonderful, action-packed, emotional roller-coaster of a read.”

Sing Along!

I love the Holiday Season! I think a lot has to do with the music. The songs we know the words to, the upbeat rhythm, the way you find yourself singing to the lyrics as you push your way through the crowded shopping centers...Oops, didn't mean to take away from the fun...Anyway you get the idea. I love to sing along much to my dear husbands chagrine. I find myself grabbing for a gallon of milk while singing Silver Bells, or humming to Winter Wonderland as I select the perfect gift for my daughters and son.

I can't help it, I love the music! What about you? Are you a sing-along kind of Holiday shopper?

Here let me get you started

"City sidewalks, busy sidewalks, dressed in holiday style
In the air there's a feeling of Christmas..."

Take it from there! I know you can!

Christmas Baking!

I spent all of Sunday doing all of my Christmas goody baking. I made 2 batches of Chocolate Chip Cookies, 2 batches of Oatmeal Raisin cookies (I snuck in some Cranraisins in them) and a batch of no-bake Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies, 3 batches of Banana Nut Bread and a batch of Divinity. Sadly, my Divinity didn't stiffen like it was supposed to.  Will have a remake on those. But yay on the rest! I've bagged and tagged and will begin delivery today of all the goodies. My daughter took 12 small bags of cookies to her teachers today. I'll be hand delivering a couple to friends with cookies, nut bread and gifts. Tomorrow we're going to a block party where I'll load up a plates of cookies and nut bread to take with me. I put them really pretty small serving plates I bought to give away with the cookies. I think it would be neat to give away a different colored serving plate each year. And I also put together a large tray of goodies for the folks at work. Of course I had to sing Christmas carols all day long to keep up the spirit. It was a lovely, scrumptious day!

What are your favorite Christmas goodies to bake at this time of year?

Sunday Report Card

I'm pleased that I finished my Nocturne Bite (to be published under my alter-ego pen name Elle James). Then I was a slacker for the rest of the week. I should have been hard at work on my next in the Body Snatchers series I want to continue for Ellora's Cave. It just means I have to work hard this week to get that one written in just this week! Ack! I can do it! I can do it! Sometimes I feel like the Little Train that Could. And I can!

Now to find a really sexy hunk of a white-blond man for the hero of my next Body Snatcher book. His name is Torsten and he's HAWT! And my heroine, Luna, is totally KICKASS! I'm jazzed and ready to begin.

Branson Shopping

Tis the season to go shopping! My dear husband, daughter and I decided to caravan with another couple and their son to the outlet malls in Branson, Missouri. This trek is a two-hour drive if you go straight there, no stops. We made it in three hours, stopping for a hearty breakfast as Raspberry junction in Missouri. It was small, quaint and enjoyable to talk over breakfast with friends and just enjoy getting out together.

Then on to the outlet mall. That's where the real fun began. We could barely get into the parking lot because of the line of traffic and the limited parking spaces. That should have been the clue to turn and run right back home. But no, we found a way around the line and ultimately a parking place in the sea of cars.

My daughter and I are experienced shoppers (that doesn't mean I really like to) and we took the mall by storm. We were half-way around by the time our friends were a tenth of the way. We bypassed the Coach store and it's line snaking around the corner for some of the more interesting stores with far less of a wait. Inside we squeezed between aisles and people, finding the sales (snort, not that great for a recession) and made our purchases.

We did our part in helping the weak retail economy with our donation to their black line. Once we'd completed the outlet mall we headed for Branson Landing. Talk about really nice shopping. There we sat down to Linner (Lunch/Dinner combined) and ate until it hurt. Needless to say, shopping afterward was limited. We perused the shops hopping from door to door quickly as the temps had dropped and our appetites were quenched in the shopping arena. The sun set, the Christmas lights illuminated capping a beautiful day with friends.

The drive home wasn't even that bad. All in all a wonderful day, purchases made and time spent with family and friends. What more could you ask?

Excerpt: Body Snatchers by Myla Jackson

Chapter One

Reggie Gallagher ducked behind the last in a row of Dumpsters and braced her hands on her knees, dragging in huge gulps of air. Sweat ran down the side of her face, and the black ribbed tank top she wore clung to her breasts. The coastal humidity and heat acted like a steam bath even when she was standing still. For the moment, all she could hear was the ragged gasps of her breath wheezing in and out of her straining lungs. And despite the retched stench of the waste beside her, she welcomed the respite from the chase.

Where was Madison? She’d been right behind Reggie until now.

The quiet of the alley was broken when pounding footsteps entered and raced toward her.

Risking a stealthy glance around the hard metal corner of the Dumpster, Reggie confirmed the runner, and she reached out to snag her and pull her in beside her.

“Can’t…stop.” Madison bent low, her shoulders heaving with the effort to fill her oxygen-starved lungs.

“Breathe,” Reggie ordered, and tapped the miniature headset positioned inside her ear like a hearing aide. “Where the hell are Jordan and Mike?”

“It’s…as…if…they disappeared.” Madison sucked in air and gushed, “Ah, shit! I can’t breathe. I don’t know if those guys saw me turn down here, but they can’t be far behind.”

“Then let’s go.” Reggie shot another glance around the corner of the Dumpster. The alley was empty. She waited another second and then grabbed her sister’s hand, pulling her along behind her.

“There!” The shout of one of their pursuers echoed off the brick of the multistory structures rising up from their concrete foundations. The buildings spread over entire blocks, channeling Reggie and Madison through the worst part of Houston, leaving few places to hide or take cover. How had the mission gone south so fast? Where was their backup?
“They’ll catch us at this rate,” Madison shouted between gasps. “Gotta split up.”
“No!” But before Reggie could tighten her grip, her younger sister pulled free and swung left, sprinting west, away from the downtown area.

Reggie glanced back at the group of six men closing in behind her. If she played her hand right, they’d follow her and leave Madison alone. The fastest runner on the team at the Paranormal Investigative Agency, she could outrun every man, except perhaps the boss. Tanner was made of iron and muscles. No one could outrun, out gun or outsmart him.

But if she wanted to live, Reggie had better make it her goal to beat all of his records and then some. She just hoped the hell Madison got away.
Summoning every last ounce of energy, she punched out, running straight for two blocks to ensure the bad boys behind her wouldn’t branch off and pursue her sister. Just as she was about to veer east, a shot rang out and something hard and fast slammed against her left shoulder, spinning her around so quickly she crashed into the brick corner of an office building.
Surprise numbed the pain for the first five seconds until her heart resumed function, kicking her blood through her body and out the ragged exit wound in the front of her shoulder. Her stomach lurched, and the pale glow of the streetlamps dimmed. No. She couldn’t pass out. Not now. Have to run. Have to get farther away from Madison.

As fog crept in around her peripheral vision, Reggie rounded the corner she’d been aiming for and set off at a swift jog, her pace slowing more each time her heels hit the pavement.

No. This couldn’t happen. She would not be another one of the victims she risked her life to protect. No way would the gang members or bloodsuckers take her down as they’d done her father.
Heartless bastards! All of them.

Although Tanner said there were good vamps out there, Reggie had it firmly in her mind that the only good vampire was a dead vampire. She repeated the words like a cadence, motivating her legs to keep pumping and her feet to continue moving away from her attackers.

“The only good vampire is a—” With only half a block between her and the six men, she reached the end of the street and swung a hard right, running into a solid wall of steel. Her forehead made contact and then her chest, knocking what little air was left from her lungs. The force of the collision made her bounce backward, her head snapping up. With no air to sustain breathing and her vision blurred, the ground sucked her downward. As her knees buckled, her mouth completed her sentence. “Dead vampire.”

“I like to think of it as the living dead.” A deep voice with one of those guttural and incredibly sexy foreign accents filled her senses, and strong arms reached out to catch her before she hit the pavement.

Would you change the past?

My best bud from high school just posted a blog about time warps and changing the past. It got me thinking about my past and if I'd change it in any way.

Sometimes I dream about what would have happened had I not married at the age of 19 and gone on to join the military and traveled the world as a single 2LT. What fun that would have been. As soon as I slip into regrets for not choosing that path, I remind myself that I have two beautiful children from that marriage that I wouldn't trade for the world.

The paths we choose are what makes us who we are. It's what drives us to greater knowledge of ourselves. Hopefully we learn to make better decisions, improve our communication and negotiation skills and grow up to be better adults. Bottom line...it makes us who we are.

Today I'm happy with who I am (I could shed a few pounds and be happier, make no mistake). I know what I want in life and who I want to spend my time with. What more could I ask?

By the way the picture is me with the curly blond hair (perms were popular then) as a LT in the Army Reserves in 1987.

What about you? Do you wish you could go back and do life differently?

Check or carry-on?

As I pack my bags for a week-long trip to Phoenix, I struggle with the check or carry-on issue. Now that the airlines charge for every bag you check, it pushes people to carry their bags on board. That then leads to less of everything. Less shampoo, less hairspray, less toothpaste and then having to pack your liquids in a plastic bag and run it through the security scanners seperately. How many of you forget you bagged the liquids and left them tucked in a pocket of your carry-on until after you've already been scanned? That's me!

I'm fast at unpacking and repacking my computer. I wear slip-on shoes for easy on and off and I don't wear excessive metal in belts or jewelry that might set of the alarms. Really, traveling by air has become a big hassle. But then again, I'm not big on really long road trips, either, so I deal with the trouble and get on with it.

Essentials in my travel? My computer. I can't go a whole week without access to the internet. It makes me completely crazy. I carry notepads because on the plane I usually get some really big guy in front of me who leans his seat back as soon as the plane takes off. Can't open the computer if someone's laying in your lap. A notepad is fine for those occasions and gives me a chance to just think...about jabbing my pencil into the guy's ear that's laying in my lap. No really, I would never! But I might write a character gone off the deep end by inconsiderate air travelers.

Oh, and since I'm a writer, when I'm writing mystery or suspense, I find that I want to ask questions that aren't appropriate for air travel. Like, How would you hide something the size of an airplane while in flight? Uh. No. Not a good question to ask of the flight attendent. And lord forbid you should mention the H word. You know...the one where you're saying the short form of hello to Jack! Nope, can't ask that question. I can't even spell it in a blog for fear I'll end up on a list somewhere.

So back to the original question. Check or carry-on? Spend $25 bucks to have the airline delay your luggage or pack less and carry-on...The answer I'll leave floating out in airspace. Hopefully we won't run into it on my flight tomorrow. That and dodging geese are my greatest flying fears.

Making Progress

I spent yesterday sitting with my high school senior daughter and her tutor preparing for the ACT test. She needed help with math and science and feels "weird" about being alone with a tutor. Actually, the tutor was cute so I had no problem sitting there with my little laptop, plotting a story I hope to put straight to Kindle. My darling sister has been through all the ropes and hoops so I'm hoping to learn from her experience.

But first, I'm working this week on my third in the BOUND and TIED Series I have coming out with Samhain Publishing. Can't wait to get started. This series is based in the 1860's. The first two books take you to the mining country of Colorado. The third will bring you back east to the Mississippi River and the gambling boats. Can't wait to write Rosalyn's story. Yay! Wish me luck!

The big "O"

The best feelings are those that have no words to describe them...Michelle Hammersley

Sometimes when I'm writing a sex scene, I find it difficult to describe the feeling of the big "O". It can be different for everyone. A really good one is hard to describe and sometimes harder to achieve!

I was researching how to achieve the big "O" on the internet and found an article that said that

to men, "O" comes naturally. But for most women, they have to learn to reach "O". It's not just hitting the right spot physically, it's about reaching it both physically and mentally.

I find that to be true. Getting in the mood is important. I do it by reading something really sexy.

What do you do to get in the mood?

Birthdays and Bucket Lists

It's my birthday and I'll be busy all day and well into the evening. But it's a good time to stop and reflect on the decades gone by. Seems like the BIG ones are the birthdays that I have to take stock of what I've accomplished and what I have yet to accomplish.
Ten years ago I looked at my life and decided if I was ever going to write a book, I'd better start then or it was never going to get done. Now I'm a published author and writing full time! Amazing! I've checked several items off my BUCKET list and added a few, mostly dealing with travel and one dealing with making the NY Times best sellers list.
But all in all it's been a fantastic life so far. Can't wait to see what's coming up next!

Cathryn Fox's Instinctive is out!

Instinctive: An Eternal Pleasure Novel
NAL Trade (October 6, 2009)
ISBN-10: 0451227948
ISBN-13: 978-0451227942

In Fox's titillating new series we enter Serene, a supernatural playground where sexy shape shifters live behind the white picket fences...

Free spirited Jaclyn Vasenty is about to inherit a cosmetics empire, yet her scandalous personal history may ruin her chance for a corporate take-over. Saying goodbye to her naughty ways, she moves into a quaint gated community in Serene, New Hampshire. But these gates are locked at sunset...

The town's dark sensuality rocks Jaclyn's insatiable appetite to the core—and stirs desires that are... inhuman. That's because Serene is home to demons, witches, vampires, lycans, and panthers, for whom primal exploration comes naturally. Especially for shape shifter Slyck, the cunning panther who's pushing Jaclyn to the brink of erotic possibilities and making her feel wildly...feral. As tension between species rises, Jaclyn learns she must draw on all her feminine wiles and join forces with Slyck if she wants to make it out alive.
Romantic Times Magazine Review:
Fox’s tale of paranormal beings and primal exploration lurking under the surface of a quaint New England town is a winner! The strong heroine and hot panther hero are a combustible combination. This book is hot enough to steam up the windows and exciting enough that you’ll ruin your manicure.
Excerpt:

In a move that took her off guard, he caught hold of her hand and hauled her into the dark alley way between buildings. Breathing ragged, and body tense, he pinned his arms on either side of her head, caging her between him and the wall. The clean scent of his freshly showered skin reached her nostrils and she pulled it into her lungs. His seductive aroma curled through her blood, reminding her she was a libidinous woman – a libidinous woman with so very many unsated needs. Slyck touched a damp lock of her hair and searched her face.

His gaze was so dark and intense it took two locked knees to keep herself upright. The air grew ripe with the scent of her arousal. She watched the way Slyck’s nostrils flared when he caught her excited tang as it saturated the narrow alley way. His eyes closed for the briefest of seconds.

She touched his face. “What-”

He cut her off and brought his mouth closer and she could have sworn she heard him purring. “You need to get out of here.”

“Why?”

He pulled her against him. Turmoil flashed in his green eyes. “Because if you don’t, I’m going to ravish you. And I don’t think it’s in your best interest,” he said with quiet certainty.

She gulped air. “What is in my best interest?”

His lips hovered over hers, and she got a heady whiff of aged scotch. “Leave town.”

That took her by surprise, especially after the sexy voyeur game he’d played with her. She crinkled her nose, wondering what was going on. Why was he suddenly pushing her away? “You want me to leave?”

“Yes. It’s for your own good.” He pulled her in tighter, his actions contradicting his words.

“It doesn’t seem like it’s for your good,” she said, stating the obvious as his hard cock pressed into her stomach.

His nostrils flared and he growled into her mouth. “Tonight, Jaclyn. Leave tonight.”

God, the way he held her, and touched her made her feel so edgy, so out of control. She wanted him more than she ever wanted a man, which gave credence to her logic to stay away, because sleeping with him wasn’t conducive to her new image. Then again, the phone sex hadn’t helped either. But the fire that brewed between her legs, and the way her birthmark began to burn and sizzle urged her to answer the demands of her body.

Just once.

Just tonight.

Then tomorrow she’d get back on track.

She had no idea what possessed her to say it, but without censoring her thoughts she said, “But you haven’t been properly punished yet.”

His hands fisted. His jaw clenched. She could feel his heart pounding so hard against his ribcage she was sure it was going to burst wide open.

“And I’m just the girl to do it,” she added.

“Oh, fuck, Jaclyn. You have no idea what you’re getting yourself into.”

She thrust her pelvis forward. “Maybe we should be thinking about what you could be getting into yourself.”

The invitation in her voice seemed to unleash something wild inside him. His hardened expression changed and took on a resigned look. Gone was his will to push her away.

“Come with me.” He roughly shackled her arms and pulled her deeper into the alley way. A moment later she found herself cutting through the deserted park with him, taking a shortcut back to his place.

Silence hovered in the air as he guided her through his back door. They entered into the kitchen, where he reached into his cupboard and poured them both a stiff drink of scotch. Jaclyn definitely wanted something stiff. But it wasn’t scotch.

A sliver of moonlight outside the window provided sufficient light for her to see him in the dimly lit room. She shook almost uncontrollably as she watched him recap the bottle and put it away. There was something very sensual in the way he moved, she decided. He turned back to face her and pushed the glass into her hand.

“Drink,” he said.

“Thanks.” She took a small sip. As the liquid burned a path down her throat, she watched him, noting how he never once took his dark, seductive gaze from hers as he downed his shot in one gulp.

“Thirsty?” she questioned, barely able to keep her voice from shaking and her body from quaking as she hungered for him with an intensity that both scared the hell out of her, and excited her just the same.

“Yup.” He put his glass down and stalked closer. He took her glass from her and put it aside, then he grabbed her firmly by the hips and backed her up against the wall. Slyck breathed a kiss over her mouth, and surfed his lips over her cheek. “But the only thing that is going to quench my thirst is your sweet cream, Jaclyn.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SIS!

This blog day is dedicated to my very special and multi-talented, smart sister, DELILAH DEVLIN!!! May she always be my sister and may she always be older than me! Yay! If you don't already know Delilah, check out her website at DelilahDevlin.com. She writes the steamiest stories your little ol' heart could stand.
I grew up in her shadow, always following in her footsteps. She taught me the important things in life, like how to smoke a cigarette (I quit, thank goodness). How to throw an army boot like a pro (at the back of my brother's head) and how to have good karma (the best lesson yet!).

My sister and I began our journey as writers as a challenge back in 2000. If not for her, I'm sure I would have given up long ago. But now I'm multipublished along with her. And we have never been closer and shared as many thoughts and dreams even when we were kids. I could never have chosen a better sister and I wouldn't trade her for Brad Pitt (well maybe for Antonio Banderas...sorry, Sis!)

I sincerely hope she has a very happy birthday and that you will all share comments here to tell her happy birthday as well!
