Warning: Battle-hardened, ready-to-cut-loose Marine teams up with a stunning Irish lass who thinks she can handle him. You’ll need the luck of the Irish to hang onto your seat for this sexy, suspenseful race across the Emerald Isle.

Sparkymom rated Mack's Witness a 4.0 out of 5 stars "Easy sexy read"

This review is from: Mack's Witness (Hearts & Heroes) (Kindle Edition)

This novel begins with Mack, a Marine deployed to Afghanistan, and his chance meeting with Deirdre, an Irish supermodel. Both have very busy lives filed with travel all over the world, and neither are looking for a relationship or any sort of ties. Unfortunately for them, their chemistry is immediately off the charts and an impromptu kiss sends things over the top. Following some heavy flirting and maybe another kiss or two, the couple decide to risk a night together...no strings attached. Mack, however, has forgotten he comes from parents who fell in love at first sight and just left his brother's wedding which was also the result of a first sight Cupid strike. When Deirdre gets nervous and tries to leave in the middle of the night, she unknowingly becomes the only witness to a murder. Mack decides to use part of his leave from the Marines to become her protection until the killers are caught. The book is not that long, so the action heats up pretty quickly. Their attempt to get off the grid and hide fails, and Mack and Deirdre have to work together to bring down the criminals.

This book seemed a little short to me, so things happened really fast. Since it seems to be a theme for this series, the love at first sight whirlwind romance didn't really bother me. I have not read any other books in this series or by this author, but I had no problems keeping up with this story as a stand alone. I would have maybe liked a little more depth on the suspense end and more time for it to build, but the characters were great...especially Mack's family. Overall, it was a sexy easy read with awesome Irish accents.

The Reading Librarian's Review

MACK'S WITNESS
By Myla Jackson

Warning: Battle-hardened, ready-to-cut-loose Marine teams up with a stunning Irish lass who thinks she can handle him. You’ll need the luck of the Irish to hang onto your seat for this sexy, suspenseful race across the Emerald Isle.

The Reading Librarian rated Mack's Witness 4.0 out of 5 stars

This review is from: Mack's Witness Kindle Edition (Hearts & Heroes)
I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. Myla Jackson writes some hot and sexy heroes and places her heroines in danger so that the heroes get to strut their stuff and make us all wish we had a hot handsome hunk waiting for us at home.

Mack’s Witness is no different. This is book two in the Hearts and Heroes series, with book one being Wyatt’s War. In book two the focus is on Mack, Wyatt’s brother, but Wyatt and the rest of his family make an appearance or two. I won’t say anymore than that because I really don’t want to spoil book number one if you haven’t read it yet. If you haven’t read book number one, then I would read one before starting two. They can be read as standalone, but personally I love knowing about how all of the characters connect and relate to one another!

So it turns out that Wyatt from book one actually has lots of siblings, which surprised me because I couldn't remember any mention of them in book one, but maybe that is because I might have glossed over that part if it was indeed mentioned – he just seemed like a lone wolf to me with just himself to rely on. Anyway, Wyatt, Mack and the rest of the family are in Ireland for a wedding and Mack has been in Afghanistan and is happy to be getting some time for R & R. What he doesn’t bank on is an ice queen – an Irish ice queen who heats him up in all of the places that haven’t been heated up for a while.

Deidre Darcy is the cousin of the bride and she is stunningly beautiful - of course as an international model, she would be wouldn’t she? Despite being a model and having a lifestyle that others would kill to have, she isn’t fulfilled and I guess that she misses being part of a family – her parents are dead, and perhaps deep down she is tired of being alone. Mack also doesn’t recognize her – but then again being in Afghanistan when/where would you see billboards with female models like the gorgeous Deidre on them?
Mack is your typical alpha male but he has a great sense of humour and from the beginning when the sparks start to fly he delights in teasing the ice queen and this just helps to make her more human and down to earth and not as distant.

There were a few issues that I had and these are just my own sensitivity to what I was reading. Deidre is Irish and I know that they speak with an accent, but accents are really hard to convey in the written form – when you listen to the Irish speak it’s more of a lilt in their voice and that is damm hard to put on paper and into words, so I guess that I probably wouldn’t try too much – maybe with elderly characters, but not with a young lady like Deirdre. What made it even more confusing for me was that there were times when Deirdre had no accent at all and the there were others when she was accent only and rather heavy at that. I understand that they were in Ireland but the in and out of accents really got to me and I just began to wish for plain language, not the Irish, with all of the feckin’ etc .

Mack’s sister Abby also describing her mother ‘We got that from our mother. She was beautiful.’ was another issue and this just jerked me out of the story and had me thinking – why use the past tense – the mother is present and she isn’t dead and there hasn’t been any mention of a disfiguring accident of any kind, so what is going on? Ah dear, this is the English teacher in me coming to the fore and I apologise but this kind of thing bugs me intensely.

Back to the story and after escaping from Mack’s room Deidre sees two guys. This was after some hot and heavy sexiness under the sheets where she is thrown for a loop because Mack affects her and she doesn’t really know how to deal with what she is feeling. She drops her things and thankfully Mack comes to her rescue and there is some more fun in the bedroom – these scenes are so perfectly written and they are not in the slightest in any way just gratuitous for the sake of having a sex scene. They are integral to the development of the story and the development of the relationship between the characters.

It turns out later that Deidre is a witness, having most probably seen the murderers who killed someone in the room next to Mack’s. It also turns out that the murderers were travelers – or in plain and simple terms gypsies. They were celebrating a very gypsy wedding in the same hotel that Mack and Deidre and the others were staying at.

So, now for issue number two. Deirdre is a witness and can identify the two suspects and the local police let her run off with Mack into the Irish countryside. Now I don’t really know that much about police in Ireland, but I am sure that if you have a witness – your one and only witness, you wouldn’t let them go and traipse all over the countryside and possibly get killed. OK, I get that it’s part of the story line but the author could just as easily have put them in a house/estate under police guard and let things happen and it would most likely have been a bit more accurate. Anyway, suffice it to say they go traipsing around Ireland and end up in a castle and somehow – and this isn’t explained – these travelers find them and all hell breaks loose.

I did like Deidre who, for being an Irish supermodel was not in any way high maintenance or conceited. She was kind and down to earth. I also really liked Mack because he was a no nonsense kind of guy who tackled problems head on and despite all of his alpha maleness he was the kind of guy you could easily fall in love with – sexy, kind, considerate, great in bed…. I can see myself waiting for books about Ronin, Sam and Abby, the rest of the siblings.

I also enjoyed how Ms. Jackson made it work that these two with such separate careers could find some middle ground and start a relationship. Both were quite resistant to start with, but it takes danger and life threatening injuries to make people come to their senses and realize that whatever the issues are, they can be worked out.
A solid second book in a new series by Myla Jackson. Get yourself Mack’s Witness and fall in love with Mack, Deidre and the rest of the Magnus tribe!

Mack's Witness is the second book in the Hearts and Heroes series. I am very lucky to say I have read both books so far. Myla Jackson has once again written a very fast paced, drama filled, steamy story that kept me on the edge of my set.

Mack and Deirdre are both part of a wedding party and meet at the airport. Mack has an instant attraction to Deirdre. Deirdre thinks that Mack is pretty hot as well. These two bicker a lot of first which leads to some humorous scenes and then some fireworks. Oh my, when things heat up, they get hot really fast. So be sure to grab that cold drink.

This book is set at the wedding of Wyatt and Fiona. Wyatt and Fiona's story was told in Wyatt's War. So it was great to see their wedding take place. The other fun thing about a wedding setting is that of course family is involved. I always enjoy books that include the family. It makes for some interesting background on the characters.

Deirdre sees something that she sure did not mean to and the bad guys sure wish she wouldn't have. I love how Mack takes charge to keep her safe. It was a lot of fun watching Mack and Deirdre get to know each other while he's keeping her safe. There is plenty of drama and a few worrisome moments. I am one of those readers that becomes attached to the new friends I am reading about so I worry when things go wrong.

Over all this another awesome story to add to this great series. I know I will certainly be looking forward to the next book in this series. I'm sure it too will keep me completely captivated and on the edge of my seat just as this one did.

This is part of a series but you won't have any trouble read it as stand alone if you want to pick it up first. If you enjoy steamy drama filled stories you will enjoy Wyatt's War as well.

I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Mack's Witness.

Blurb

Tired of eating sand and dodging bullets, Marine Captain Mack Magnus is ready to relax and enjoy his brother’s Dublin wedding. If that involves a few pints in a quaint Irish pub and getting laid by a pretty Irish lass, all the better.

Instead he winds up getting ordered around by the cousin of the bride. Fed up with her mouthy attitude, he kisses her to shut her up. Now he has a new mission: get into the sexy redhead’s panties.

Busy international model Deirdre Darcy knows the six-foot-four Marine’s type: hit-and-run sex and off to the next port. Fall into bed with an arrogant bastard like Mack? No thanks. When she stumbles upon a couple of Irish gypsies leaving a murder scene, she must go into hiding or become their next victim.

His protective instincts kicking into high gear, Mack whisks Deirdre away to a small town where it’s easier to keep her safe. Except there’s no escape from their growing attraction—or from the one thing neither of them thought they wanted. Love.

Warning: Battle-hardened, ready-to-cut-loose Marine teams up with a stunning Irish lass who thinks she can handle him. You’ll need the luck of the Irish to hang onto your seat for this sexy, suspenseful race across the Emerald Isle.

Excerpt

Lead in: Undercover at a castle Bed and Breakfast, hiding from the murderers she can identify, Deirdre is tired, dispirited and in need of a big hug from one handsome American Marine.

She stripped out of her soiled clothing, twisted the handles on the faucet and tried to get the shower to come on. No matter what she flipped, twisted or pulled, the water didn't divert to the shower head.

Faced with defeat and not wanting to take a bath in the tub, she stuck her head out the door and caught Mack with his shirt off and his jeans unbuttoned. Her mouth watered like a dog staring at slab of meat. The hard plains of his chest could have been forged in steel. The tight line of his jaw set in stone. She gulped and almost shut the door when he glanced up and caught her staring.

“Need something?”

“I can’t—” Her voice squeaked and heat rose up her chest into her cheeks. “I can’t get the shower to come on.”

“Let me try.”

She grabbed a towel to wrap around her body before the big Yank wedged himself through the door. Barely covered, Deirdre backed as far as she could and almost tripped over the loo.

Mack entered the tight confines of the room, a smile playing at the corners of his lips.

“Seems the only space available in this room is the tub.”

The longer he fiddled with the faucet, the hotter Deirdre became until she could stand it no longer. By the time water sprayed from the shower head, she’d made up her mind.

“There you go.” He turned to leave.

Taking a deep breath, she spoke in her most sultry voice, the one she used for the perfume commercials. “Aren’t you going to join me?”

When he glanced over his shoulder at her, she dropped the towel, stepped into the shower and lifted her face to the spray, letting the water run over her eyes and down her body, praying her invitation would be accepted. To up the ante, she cupped her breasts and leaned back to let the water hit them directly. If her ploy worked, Mack’s gaze would be on them. Her nipples puckered in anticipation of Mack’s hands gliding over them, tweaking the tips and then sucking them into his mouth.

Then the sound of the door closing made her heart drop into the pit of her belly.

No… surely he hadn't…he wouldn't leave, would he? Afraid to open her eyes and discover the ugly truth, Deirdre squeezed them tighter to keep ready tears from falling. Mack hadn't taken her up on her offer. He’d left without even touching her once.

“Feckin’ Yank. He doesn’t know what he’s missing,” she said, her voice wobbling on a sob.

Evampire9 posted the following review from: Mack's Witness (Hearts & Heroes) (Nook's Edition)

A passionate fling during a family wedding and then back to their careers is all Mack and Deirdre is after until danger comes calling and all Mack’s protective instincts kick in and there is no escaping the one thing either of them wanted…falling in love in this erotic contemporary romance.

This fast paced and smooth flowing plot captivates readers with suspense and red hot passion.  The author brings the story to life with well written scenes and details that capture the imagination and the suspense and passion draws the readers deeper into the story while the strong compelling characters grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning.

The undeniable attraction between Mack and Deirdre burns hot from first sight and the passion continues to blaze hotter throughout the story with frequent hot and steamy sex scenes.  The relationship however is on shaky ground as their careers make a great argument against giving into something permanent…right? The danger of being chased by the bad guys adds some spice to the story but the reader can’t help but get swept up into the passion that these two exude as they get through the wedding and then go on the run.

The Magnus brothers are sexy and charming and the reader can’t help falling for the heroes in this quick but passionate and sensual stories. I was caught up in the story from the beginning and I can’t wait to read the next one.
