Kate frowned. “You mean to tell me you don’t remember fucking me like a dog?”

His eyes widened. “Oh my God, did I?” He shook his head. “My apologies. I don’t know what came over me. I’ve never fuck—made love to a woman like she was an animal.”

“You’re not pulling my leg, are you?” She pushed against him. “I mean, you were going at it like you knew what you were doing. I thought you wanted to do it.” Her face warmed and then her eyes widened. “Oh shit.”

“What?”

“The wish.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I wished you’d fuck me like a whore.”

“You did what?” Will shouted.

Kate shot to her feet and planted her fists on her naked hips. “I was testing a theory.”

“I’d say your test proved your theory.”

“You mean you didn’t do it because you wanted to?” Her chest tightened at the thought.

“One minute we were arguing, the next minute my body took over and I can’t do a thing about it.” He glanced down at his glistening cock, lying flaccid against his leg.

“Talk about a blow to the ego.” Jeez. How did you face the man you more or less raped on a wish?

“Not that I didn’t enjoy it.” He grinned. “On the contrary, it was…animalistic.”

So much for feeling sorry for the guy. Kate grabbed the pillow he’d discarded and shoved it into his chest. “Great. Now you’ll think I’m a fucking animal.”

Disregarding the discarded towel, Kate stalked across the room, naked and not giving a damn.

Will caught up with her and grabbed her arm. “Kate, you’re beautiful and whether or not I fu—made love to you of my own will, I’m grateful.

“Of all the stupid, insensitive, moronic things a guy could say—”

The wind was knocked from her sails when Will’s lips descended over hers, shutting off the stream of epithets she was ready to sling at him.

Despite her resolve to throw him out at the first chance she got, Kate melted into his arms and returned his kiss.

When they broke apart, she gathered enough wind to say, “Don’t think you won that argument.”

He gave her a purely superior, male smile. “I think my talents have proven themselves.”

“Oh, so now you’re the cocky one?” She raised her eyebrows and glanced at the pillow held in front of his penis. “I have the power to wish, you have to grant my wishes. I wouldn’t push me.”

“Don’t push you?” Will stalked across the room his ire rising with each step he took on the lush carpet emphasizing his nakedness. “Are you Daddy’s little girl used to getting her way at the expense of others? Good God, Kate, who died and made you princess of the world?”

Her eyes widened and the proud and adventurous Kate whose eyes flashed fire a moment before glistened with a film of unshed tears.

She met him halfway across the floor and poked her finger in his chest. “He is not dead. Do you hear me? Not!” On that final word, she turned, walked into the bedroom shutting the door between them.

On the other side of the panel she continued to talk, the words muffled and hard to understand.

“Now what?” Will asked the empty room. Without Kate in it, he was at a loss and not liking it. “If you really can make wishes come true you could at least wish me some decent clothing,” he shouted through the panel.

More muttering sounded from within and then the building rocked. As thunder rattled the windows, Will felt his skin tingle. When he looked down, he had the damned clown suit on again.

“Just who the hell is Elvis, some freak in a sideshow?” he yelled at the panels of the closed door.

The door crashed open and Kate stood there wearing what looked like a black, sleeveless undershirt and khaki pants and carrying a brush. Her hair hung down around her shoulders and the fire was back in her eyes. “Elvis was the king.”

“King of what? Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus?” He had a hard time concentrating on the conversation when there was still so much of Kate’s arms and shoulders to see beneath the slip of a shirt.

“What do you know? If you really are from, what was it, 1924, you wouldn’t have a clue.”

“I am and I don’t. Enlighten me.”

As Kate raked the brush through her hair, she explained, “Elvis was the king of rock and roll, a new era in music that changed everything.”

“Interesting. And did you know Elvis personally?”

“No, he died before I was born.”

“Then why did you say he wasn’t dead?”

“I wasn’t talking about Elvis.” She turned away from him and strapped a knife to her forearm.

“If you weren’t talking about Elvis who had your knickers all in a twist?”

“Oooh!” She faced him with the knife pointed at his chest. “I did not have my knickers in a twist.”

“Did too.” Will pushed the knife aside. “Be careful where you point that. And tell me that isn’t all you’re going to wear. Do all women go around partially clothed and wearing men’s trousers?”

With a deep breath, she blew air out her nose like an angry bull. “I wish you’d go to Hell, Will.”

“Please tell me you didn’t wish me to go to Hell.” He grimaced and waited. As expected, the floor beneath him rolled. “I don’t have a good feeling about this.”

“Too bad. You pissed me—”

Before Kate finished her sentence, Will’s world went black.

Will staggered through a blisteringly hot, red desert. The wind blew at hurricane force, blasting him with sand and ash. Everything, including the air he breathed, burned like fire. The white fringe hanging from his arms burst into flame. As he flapped around like a bird, his eyebrows started smoking. Alternating between flapping and slapping his eyebrows, Will yelled into the sand-filled gusts, “Harry, what have you gotten me into?”

My Report Card

I made a good start at my To Do list this week and sadly petered out. I guess I'm going to have to crank up the pace this week to meet some of my January goals!
1) Kicked off the Roses Plotting Bootcamp with my sister Delilah Devlin.
2) Responded to lessons from the Plotting Bootcamp;
3) Revised FREE RIDER the sequel to BOOTS AND CHAPS. Added 4K words, but not finished.
4) Made serious updates to a website for my mother's art guild. Check out caddoriverartguild.com
5) Loaded Saturday Snippet Blog
6) Completed interview for Inspiration Forum
7) Had lunch with an aspiring writer. I hope I didn't scare her off...
8 ) Blogged on Wild and Wicked Cowboys
9) Missed the Diamond State Romance Authors‘ monthly meeting where I was supposed to co-host a talk about time managements and planning with my sister, Delilah Devlin. Couldn't make the 3.5 hour trip yet.
10) Attended 2 Physical Therapy sessions for my torn ACL
11) Had two blood draws to check to see if my blood thinners are working to keep me alive from the blood clot I got as a result of the torn ACL.
12) Took dog to the vet for ear infection and stinky skin issues. What's with that malti-poo? Sigh, high maintenance, but my friend. What can I do but love her?
13) Worked at our machine shop wrapping up the Quality Audit Response.

Not enough of writing, that's for certain. I've been a little distracted due to the blood clot. Having to give myself 2 shots a day to kick-start the blood thinners. Now I know how my diabetic dad feels!

Her skin cooled as the air dried the water droplets. "But I can't remain celibate for an entire week, when he's right downstairs." She tugged against the arm holding her. "Let me go."

"No way." Lacey put herself between Kendall and the staircase and pushed Kendall back into her apartment. "Take a deep breath and tell me what happened with Plan B."

Kendall stared at her apartment door, her blood raging through her veins. The fact that she stood in front of her friend without a stitch of clothing on should have been an indication she was losing it. She was past caring, her rampant desire pushing her to the brink of sanity. "I'm on fire." Kendall's hands crossed over her breasts and ran down to the apex of her thighs. "All I can think about is him taking me, again and again. This sex education plan is making me even more crazy than before. How is that helping me?"

Lacey took Kendall into her arms and hugged her. "Shh, baby. It'll be okay."

"I don't want you to love him less, and I have no intention of stealing you away. I'm just helping you keep your sanity until phase two of Plan B." Lacey tweaked the hard little button on the tip of her nipple. "Now shut up and close your eyes again. I'll even lower my voice if that helps."

Snippet Saturday - Place as part of a scene

My setting for this snippet is the Ugly Stick Saloon in the fifth book in the DIRTY TRICKS series

FIVE SECOND SEDUCTION

One thing was certain, if she couldn't get Connor interested while wearing nothing but a pushup bra and a vest, then she'd give up and go back to her vibrator.

Before Charli had gone five feet, Audrey hurried around her, tugging her t-shirt in place. She grabbed Libby, the bartender, and whispered into her ear. Then a grinning Audrey disappeared back into the store room.

As she stepped out onto the saloon floor, Charli's gaze panned the room, lighting on Connor Mason. He sat at a table near the dance floor, talking to Mark, Luke Gray Wolf and his high school buddy, Ed Judson.

Crap. Why couldn't he be alone? Vamping in front of a table full of his friends wouldn’t be easy. But damn it, her pussy ached for some action and she needed to know where she stood with the man.

Squaring her shoulders and sparing a last glance at her plumped cleavage, Charli grabbed a tray and started for the table.

The music on the juke box ended and a new song started, the tune Charli knew all too well. The song that gave every woman hope and filled her with the promise of finding that someone who touched her heart.

Charli groaned and turned back to the bar, biting down on her bottom lip. Should she ignore the music or go for it?

Libby held out a microphone in her direction.

"Really? This song?" Charli set the tray on the wooden bar and snatched the mic from Libby, her heartbeat kicking up a notch, knowing the words as if they had been etched in her brain for all of eternity. The song sung by one of country music's most talented artists. How could Charli, a nobody from Temptation, Texas, begin to measure up? And if she fell short? What if Connor was a big fan of the real artist? What if he didn't like Charli's version?

Self-doubt reared its nasty head, and Charli almost ran from the bar. But the music played on and her need to sing the lyrics made her mouth open. The dance floor cleared and a path opened, allowing her through to the center, directly in front of the table where Connor and his friends sat.

The man next to Connor's whistled at Charli and patted his lap.

Connor glared at him and scooted his chair closer to where Charli stood, giving her his complete attention.

Heat spread through Charli's body. Her voice started out soft, the words filling her, so tender, so gentle, swelling to the refrain. In just a few moments, she stood in the middle of the dance floor, her gaze on Connor, music swirling all around her. She sang the song to him, about him, for him. Her gaze captured his and her chest tightened, the words flowing as if from her heart to his.

When the music ended, another song followed on the juke box and couples moved out onto the dance floor.

Charli stood in a trance, her gaze locked on Connor, unable to form a coherent thought except how much she wanted him to take her in his arms and love her like the lyrics in the song. But Jackson said men were simple. Would Connor get that she'd just poured out her feelings for him, and everyone else, to see? Suddenly, she felt exposed, more so than the stupid vest and bra could begin to reveal. She'd laid open her heart and soul. As fear, embarrassment and emotion welled up inside, Charli's muscles bunched to run.

Then Connor stood, his smoky gaze unfathomable, and he stalked toward her like a panther claiming his territory, joining her on the wooden floor. "Can I have this dance?"

Heart racing, she nodded, all words now locked below the lump in her throat. As she moved into his arms, the need to run transformed into a need to get closer to this special man.

"I knew you could sing...but not like that." His arms tightened around her back. "You have a gift."

In a rush of relief, she laid her face against his chest, wanting to tell him that she'd sung the song just for him. But she couldn't, the emotion was too new, too raw.

All too soon, the music of the song faded and their feet came to a standstill.

Catherine's knees clamped around the man's arms, her thighs pressing hard holding him down, for how long, she didn't know. Fear and adrenaline pushed through her veins as she gripped his throat and squeezed, her fingers tightening around his windpipe. "Where am I, and who the hell are you?"

"Will you let me breathe?" the man gasped, the pupils in his golden eyes dilating.

"No." Her fingers squeezed harder, a shiver of fear feathering across her skin. "I don't trust you."

The man's eyes squeezed shut.

For one frightening moment, Catherine thought she'd killed him.

Then the man beneath her erupted off the floor. One moment, she was practically thrown into the air. The next, she was lying on her back on the hardwood floor, hands pinned above her head, a lean, hard body pressing against her, rendering her immobile.

"Get off me." She bucked and twisted, unable to move more than an inch or two in any direction.

"I will, when you promise to behave." He stared, his eyes narrowing, the pupils dilating, capturing her attention.

Her struggles ceased. "I know you."

"I don't think so."

"You're Lucien, the chauffeur. Etienne's replacement." She glanced around, taking in rough hew walls and masculine furnishings. "I've been kidnapped, haven't I?"

"Yes, I'm Lucien, but most people call me Luc.” He shook his head. “And no, I didn't kidnap you."

Catherine snorted. "Don't play dumb with me. It's kidnapping if I didn't ask to be brought here, and I didn't."

"Think again." He leaned over her, his mouth descending toward hers.

Startled by his nearness, Catherine's lips parted, her breath rising in a suspended gasp.

At the last moment, he turned his head and ducked low, his breath stirring the tendrils of hair below her ear. "Think. What was the last thing I asked you?"

She shook her head, her mind reeling from sudden desire, her lips tingling from an almost-kiss. "I d-don't remember."

"Then let me remind you." While one hand held her wrists, the thumb on his other hand stroked her chin. "I asked, Where to? And you said..." He tipped his head, his brows rising.

Memory of her exact words flooded through her mind. "An island out in the middle of nowhere." Her gaze darted from side to side. "Where am I?"

"You're on an island." He grinned.

"A what?" Catherine bucked beneath him. "I don't believe you."

"See for yourself." He leaped to his feet and yanked her up from the floor all in one fluid motion.

Caught off balance, she fell against him. His arm circled her waist, steadying her. The warmth of his hand filtering through the thin chiffon layers of her dress. Heat pooled deep in her belly, burning a path even lower. How long had it been since she'd be as sexually stirred? And he was a stranger. A dangerous one, at that. Catherine shoved at his hand. "I don't need you to hold me up and I don't believe we are on an island."

He waved toward the bedroom door. "See for yourself."

Free from his hold, Catherine raced for the front door, bursting through, and would have pitched off the edge of the porch and out into the water, if Lucien hadn't grabbed her around the waist and pulled her back against him.

Dark water surrounded them with little hummocks of land dotting the surface where trees and underbrush clung to the soil in a tangle of roots.

"Are you crazy? Where are we? A bayou or something?" Her throat clenching tightly, she pounded his chest.

"Take me home immediately."

"I'll take you home...just not yet." He let go.

Catherine staggered backward, careful not to fall in. She stared across the landscape at cypress trees so tall their branches wove a canopy, allowing only small patches of sunshine to illuminate the inky blackness of the still water. "You live here? Alone?"

"My brother and I live here. And we're not alone. Many other creatures live in the bayou."

She huffed. "Creatures, yeah, I can believe that. What about other humans?"

He shrugged. "Not many."

Trepidation growing, she stared at the black water surround the island. "How do you get here?"

"By boat."

Her pulse racing, she sucked in a deep breath and let it out slow and steady. "You really did bring me somewhere nobody could find me." A shiver shook her body, even as the heat and humidity pressed close. She wrapped her arms around herself. "Take me home, please."

"I will," he said. "Tomorrow. I promise."

SNIPPET SATURDAY - Endings

I sat for a long time staring at the beautiful, vibrant red-head, gyrating around the floor like there was no tomorrow. For her, there would be none—for me an endless procession of tomorrows. Molly had lived only twenty five years. I'd lived more than two hundred. She was just beginning her life—I was tired of mine. I wanted to grow old and die. Molly wanted to live.

I stood, walked across the floor, knowing exactly what had to happen, should Molly choose. As if on cue, the music ended and the band went on break. Molly stood out in the middle of the floor as everyone else filtered back to their tables and drinks. Someone played a soft lilting song on the juke box.

I gathered Molly in my arms and swayed with her to the music. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"I didn't want your pity, just your love."

"Honey, you have my love." I hugged her closer, my eyes filling with tears.

"I wanted you in my life, to grow old with and love for a very long time. But I don't have that long."

"You could, if you choose."

Molly shook her head. "The doctor gives me two months. How can I pack a lifetime in two months?"

"I know how you can live longer."

"You can?"

"Do you trust me?"

She nodded. "With my life."

"I can give you more time in your life, if you let me."

Light from the disco globe shone in her eyes. "How?"

"Just one bite." I ran a finger along her neck, stopping at the base of her throat where her carotid artery beat strong.

Molly leaned back in my arms. "Huh?"

"It's a gift, kind of like the myths of the vampire, but not."

"Vampires aren't real."

"No, they aren't, but I am and it will only take one bite from me and you'll be cured."

"I've never seen you drink blood."

"I'm not a vampire, and you won't be either. You won't crave blood or have to stay out of daylight. But you will live forever or until you decide to pass the gift to the next woman." I cupped her cheek. "Only one woman at a time can carry the gift."

"What gift is this?"

"A gift as old as Adam, the gift of Lilith." I chuckled. "Don't look so doubtful. I'm over two hundred years old."

"What?" She tried to pull free of my arms.

I gently hugged her to me, swaying to the music. "The question is, do you want to live?"

"Yes." She sagged against me, the music the only sound for several moments. "I want to live with you forever, Katherine."

I stopped moving. "That can't be. When I pass the gift of Lilith to you, you will become immortal and I will grow old and die."

"But I don't want you to die. What good would it be to be immortal without you?"

"I've had a long life, you haven't. You have much more to experience—I've had enough. I want to grow old and die. Please, let me give you this gift. I want you to have it."

"But—"

"I ask again. Do you want to live?"

She stared into my eyes, her own filling with tears. "Yes."

“Julie? Julie, wake up!”

What? She was in such a dead sleep, she could barely push her eyelids open. When she did, she stared up at a familiar face. “William? What are you doing in my apartment?” Julie pushed against her bed, only she didn’t feel the soft, clean Laura Ashley sheets. Instead, she felt the grit of pavement and grime beneath her hands. “What the hell?”

As her vision cleared, she focused on William Fagan, the guy who lived in the apartment across the hallway from her in the old colonial house on Sixth Street. The gray light of predawn filtered through the buildings to barely illuminate the alley in which she lay flat on her face on the dirty pavement. “Where am I?”

“You’re about three blocks from home and we need to get there in a hurry.”

“What happened?” She sat up, brushing gravel from her cheek.

“I’ll explain what I know when we get you inside. But if we don’t get you home soon, you’ll fry.” He scooped an arm beneath her shoulders and hefted her to an upright position. “Come on.”

Julie sprang to her feet, feeling strangely light and bouncy for having slept on the pavement. What the hell was going on? Before she could ask another question, William took off at a run, her hand still in his.

Because she hadn’t made a move to follow, he practically jerked her arm out of socket. Once she got her running legs going, she had no trouble keeping his pace, which was strange in itself. She hadn’t jogged or worked out on a regular basis in months. The night shift had thrown her workout schedule completely off. By all rights, she should be gasping for air. But she wasn’t. In fact, she was barely breathing hard at all. “What’s the rush?”

“No time to explain,” he called over his shoulder. “Hurry!”

The sky changed from dull, battleship gray to the vibrant pinks, purples and orange of dawn just as they arrived in front of the huge old house that had been divided into six apartments. As the sun popped over the horizon and cast its first rays of light onto her and William, she could feel a terrible burning sensation ripping across her exposed skin. Tingling, turned to prickling and finally to searing and she smelled the distinct odor of burning flesh. Her burning flesh.

William yanked the front door open and shoved her inside. He pushed her so hard, she sprawled on the floor, sliding several feet before she stopped. “Hey, you don’t have to be so rough!”

He slammed the door closed behind him and collapsed against the heavy wood paneling. “Whew! That was close.”

“Close to what?” Julie pushed to her feet and dusted the grit from her hands. “I thought you were such a nice neighbor. What’s with slamming me to the ground? That’s no way to treat a lady.”

“Honey, I hate to break it to you. But you’re no lady.”

“That’s not funny.” When William only stared at her, Julie’s back straightened, anger rising in the form of a blood rush to her head. “I beg your pardon.”

“Beg all you want, but as of early this morning, you’re no longer a lady.” He hooked her elbow and ushered her to the staircase leading to the second level of the house and their apartments. “If you’ll step into my apartment, I’ll fill you in.”

She planted her feet against the smooth black and white tiles of the foyer bringing William to a halt. Then she shook his hand free of her elbow. “I’m not going anywhere with someone who tells me I’m no longer a lady. I’ll have you know, I don’t sleep around. In fact, I haven’t had sex in…well…that’s none of your business.” Three years, three loooonnnng years. But that was about to change. Tonight. She had a date.

“I’m not talking about sex.” He reached for her arm again.

Julie pulled away. “If you’re not talking about sex, then what are you talking about? Unless you know about a sex change operation I might have had in the few short hours I was unconscious, I’m still a woman and therefore—”

“Could you shut up long enough to get up the stairs?” William left her standing in the hallway and took the steps two at a time. “Sheesh, woman.”

“Ah hah! You admit it. I am a woman, therefore a lady.” She followed behind him. Taking the same steps he did, two at a time. She never took steps two at a time. Normally, she was wheezing and gasping for air as she climbed steps one at a time, never mind two at a time. But here she was taking two…and she tried it…three steps at a time. No problem. Maybe she should get conked on the head more often. It beat the hell out of a regular workout routine.

Much as she’d like to get a shower and head for bed, she needed to know a few things. “By the way, William, why was I sleeping in an alley like a homeless person?”

He waited for her to cross his threshold, and then he closed his door and pushed the bolt home. “Now, that we’re inside and don’t stand the chance of being seen or overheard, I can fill you in. Why you couldn’t just keep quiet until we got here, I don’t know.” He took a deep breath and stared down at her.

“I never was very good at surprises and I get the feeling you’re about to surprise me. I’m not going to like the surprise, am I?”

With a worried frown, William blew out a long, steady breath. “Maybe you better sit down.”

Uh-oh. She didn’t like the way he was stalling. “What, did the landlord evict me and I stumbled out into the street, devastated and homeless?”

“No, nothing as simple as that.”

“That’s simple?” Double uh-oh. She perched on the edge of his bomber-jacket brown leather sofa. “Okay, I’m sitting. Just tell me already. I’m dying here.”

“You can’t die, Julie. You’re already dead.”

Her mouth dropped open. “Huh?” Who was he trying to kid? She was a walking, talking, gawking person sitting in his living room. “Uh, William. Have you been smoking some wacky weed or something? Hellooooo. If I’m here talking to you, how can I be dead?”

“It’s complicated.”

“Try me.”

“Then keep an open mind.” His eyebrows dropped toward the bridge of his nose in a V.

“I’m open.”

“Julie, last night, you were turned.”

“Turned?” She grasped for any possible meaning she could come up with for the unfamiliar phrase. “Like a fruit held too long on the branch turned?”

“No.”

“Like coming out of the closet gay turned?”

“No.”

“I give up.” She sat back against the couch, her arms crossing over her chest. “What do you mean?”

“Turned as in from human to vampire.”

She could have caught flies as low as her jaw dropped. “William, I’ve known you, what, a year and a half, maybe?”

“Yeah.”

“And this is the first time you’ve ever done anything remotely weird.”

“So?”

“So.” She pushed up from the couch and strode for the door. “I’ll cut you a break. I’m going home to shower and bed. When I wake up, maybe we can start this conversatio all over. ‘Cause I know you didn’t just say I’ve been turned to a vampire, and I know you’re not crazy. I’m counting it as a really bizarre nightmare I’ll wake up from after a decent amount of sleep.”

Kindra retreated to her silent place, leaving Catherine alone on the rooftop, the cold seeping into her skin.

Her knees buckled and she sank to the floor, her eyes dry, her heart aching for the young woman inside her. How could she stop the inevitable? She’d cheated death from claiming his prize a year ago, but she had no choice this time. A sob rose in her throat and she swallowed it down, burying her face in her hands.

“Kindra?” A deep male voice called out to her.

Gentle hands gripped her shoulders and lifted her to her feet. Then she was pulled against a solid wall of muscles and engulfed in a warm embrace. “What’s wrong?” Sam Cade tipped her chin up and stared down in her eyes.

What could she say? By morning Kindra would be dead and Catherine would be somewhere else? A mirthless laugh escaped her lips, followed by a trickle of tears trailing down her cheeks.

Sam’s thumb brushed a tear away, a frown creasing his forehead. “How can I help if you don’t let me know what’s bothering you?”

“You couldn’t fix the problem if you tried. Even I can’t.”

“At least let me try.”

She shook her head and pressed her cheek to his chest, listening to the sound of his heart beating against her ear. “Just hold me.” She needed to feel him, touch him. He was so alive. Catherine wanted to feel alive again.

“You’re freezing. Why don’t you let me take you back to your apartment?”

“No!” Not yet. Not until midnight. Then she could let Kindra go back to her apartment and go to bed. Maybe she’d wake up just fine. Maybe Michael would give the girl a reprieve from death.

Maybe pigs flew in Manhattan.

“Then come back to my apartment. I have coffee and hot cocoa.” He hooked his arm around her shoulder and led her away from the rails and through the doorway into the stairwell.

Numb and shivering now, Catherine’s teeth rattled against each other. She let Sam take over. For so long, she’d had to be the strong one in every life she’d inhabited. Tonight she faced the knowledge her host would die. Suddenly the will to live welled up inside, filling her with a sense of urgency.

She turned to Sam. “Make love to me, Sam.”

His eyes widened and he paused on the head of the steps leading down to the elevator. “Here? Now?”

“Yes. Here and now.” She had to show Kindra how wonderful it was to live, how beautiful making love could be. Catherine wanted all those things herself. A chance to live with one man for the rest of her life. Kindra had to see how precious was her gift of a healthy body with nerves, sensations and emotions to feed the soul. Catherine slipped the straps off her shoulders and shivered. “Make this a night we’ll both remember.”

That’s it? Had his brothers actually complied with his wishes for the first time ever? Jackson smiled as he headed toward his room, the smile fading the closer he got to his door. Turning thirty had been a completely normal day. So much so, it left him feeling a bit empty. If he wasn’t mistaken, he’d say he was downright sad. No party, no Audrey. All he had to show for the day was one torn shirt and a doctored cow udder.

Jackson pulled his shirt over his head and sat on the side of his bed, toeing off his boots, one at a time, dropping them to the floor.

A loud thump and a shout sounded from the living room. What the heck were Mark and Luke up to at this hour? Weren’t they getting a little old to wrestle in the house? Jackson listened and the noise stopped.

When he stood to unbutton his jeans, music filtered through his door. The sound built and swelled, thump, thump, thumping against the walls until Jackson could no longer ignore it. Anger surged through him as he shoved through his door and stomped down the hallway to the living room.

The couches had been pushed back against the walls and all of the lights had been turned down or off except one lamp that had been stripped of its shade, the bulb replaced by a black-light bulb. A strobe light perched on the fireplace mantel blinked off and on, adding to the nightclub feel of the room.

Jackson came to a halt, nearly tripping over an ottoman when a lithe, graceful figure entered the room. Her long, straight, platinum-blonde hair swung down around her hips. A white cowboy hat and a Lone Ranger mask guarded her face from view. But it wasn’t her face Jackson was looking at.

She wore a white blouse tied snuggly beneath her full, voluptuous breasts. Her bare midriff displayed taut abs all the way down to the tie strap of the leather chaps riding low on the sexy swell of her hips. Beneath the chaps she wore a white string-bikini bottom that glowed brightly. “What the hell’s going on?” he shouted.

Sam missed BJ’s question, his gaze captivated by the woman standing with a glass of champagne, a sad smile playing around her lips. Something about her pale blue eyes and the way she stared with longing at the couples dancing amid soft blinking lights called out to him. Despite his words to the contrary, Sam wanted to meet the woman. His feet shifted and he stepped out.

BJ’s hand smacked him in the arm. “Did I do right by you, buddy?”

Boy, did he. No use letting him in on the news. BJ would just get a big head, besides, Sam wasn’t sure he should move on his instincts to go meet the woman. “I guess she’s all right.”

“Now, where’s mine. I’m anxious to meet the future Mrs. Drake.”

Sam gave his friend an exasperated look. “Aren’t you getting ahead of yourself?”

“I never date a woman I’m not willing to marry.” BJ stared around the room. “So, where is she?”

A woman with a shock of bright red curls joined the blonde. Sam squelched the chuckle rising in his chest. Perfect. “She’s next to the blonde. Say hello to the future Mrs. Drake.”

“Hey, I gave you a sex goddess and you give me Little Orphan Annie?”

“BJ Drake, I’ve never known you to pass on a challenge. Are you telling me you aren’t going to give my choice for you a chance?”

BJ scowled. “Some friend you are.” He grabbed another glass of champagne from a passing caterer. “Come on, let’s go meet our futures.”

Now that he was headed across the floor to meet the blonde, Sam wasn’t so sure it was a good idea. What would he say? He’d been out of the dating scene for the most part, having been in a steady relationship for the past year and a half. His gut clenched and butterflies invaded. Storming a crack house wasn’t nearly as nerve-wracking as chatting up a strange woman who looked like a super model.

Since this was BJ’s idea, Sam couldn’t back out now. Not with BJ headed the same way. Tamping down his nerves, he attacked the task as if he were about to face a crime boss head-on.

When Sam and BJ were only halfway across the floor, two other men approached the women. They shook hands and then the men led them out onto the dance floor.

“Damn.” BJ shook his head. “Guess if you snooze you lose. I was getting used to the idea of a redhead. I’ve never been with a redhead before.”

“Songs only run for three minutes,” Sam pointed out. Not that he cared. Or so he told himself, although the sense of relief he felt came out of nowhere when he realized the music had changed to a lively rock beat. The thought of the silvery blonde in another man’s arms did bad things to his insides. Was it possible to be jealous even when you hadn’t met the woman?

BJ glanced around the lobby. “I could use a beer.”

“What, had enough champagne?” Sam’s gaze followed the woman around the floor.

“Not particularly. Wanna hit the bar?”

“You go ahead. I’m fine for now.” BJ could have stayed or gone, Sam wouldn’t have known. He only had eyes for her. Was she a tenant in the apartment complex? Had he ridden the elevator with her a hundred times and never seen her? Was he becoming obsessed in only a few short minutes?

Impossible.

By the time the song ended, his hands were clenched in his pockets. A sultry rhythm took the place of the rock song and the man the blonde had been dancing with grabbed her hand when she would have walked away.

No way. All his cop instincts kicked in and Sam charged onto the dance floor like a bull moose in full rut.

The woman was shaking her head and tugging against the man’s grip.

“Hi, sweetheart. I see you found a dance partner while I was away.” Sam turned to the man whose hand was gripping the blonde’s wrist. “Thank you for entertaining my wife while I ran up to check on the babysitter.”

“Huh?” The man’s grip loosened, and he dropped the woman’s arm. “Excuse me.” Then he ran like a scalded cat.

“You’d think I had the plague the way that guy took off.” She rubbed at the red mark on her wrist from the guy’s bruising fingers. “Thanks.” Then she turned the full force of her smile on him.

The music swirled around them, weaving a tantalizing spell on Sam. Now that he’d done the cop thing, he should turn around and leave. He’d just been dumped by one woman, he didn’t need the complications of another woman in his life so soon. He’d only be on the rebound. Wouldn’t he? “Would you like to dance?”

“I suppose it’s only right, afterall we’re married and have children together.” She moved into his arms and laid her fingertips against his chest, her body straight, despite the music’s intimate rhythm. “One problem...”

“If it’s a bad guy, I’ll shoot him.” He tried to pull her closer, but she pushed against him. “Really, I’m a cop, no thug is too tough.” Where was he getting this corny talk? Sam resisted the urge to slap his own forehead.

“Slow down, Lone Ranger. I don’t need rescuing.” She laughed, the sound better than the music and twice as intoxicating as the best champagne. Make that rum and coke. “I just want to know the name of my husband.”

Her scent wrapped around him, the soft aroma of honeysuckle and moonlight. He should leave, now. “Sam. My name’s Sam Cade.” He leaned back. “And your name?”

“Cath—Kindra.”

Why had she stumbled over her name? Was she afraid he was a Tom cat on the prowl? “Kindra, huh?” He stared hard into her pale blue eyes. “You don’t look like a Kindra.”

Her heartbeat skittering into panic mode, Catherine dug her paddle into the water so deep her fingers got wet and the canoe turned away from the shoreline and the large feline. Again, she struck out on the same side, desperate to put enough water between her and the animal. Instead, the canoe spun in a circle.

The gold eyes flashed and the panther's mouth opened, long sharp teeth glinting in a flash of sunshine. It growled, a paw stretching out, claws extended.

Her heart thumping hard against her chest, Catherine knew she had to paddle on the other side to straighten the boat and get away from the cat. Her wets hands shook badly as she swung the paddle to the opposite side. The wooden oar slipped from her fingers and plunged into the water, shooting away before she could grab it.

The cat in the shadows surged forward.

Catherine lunged for the paddle, the canoe tipped and she fell in, her long dress weighing her down, dragging her to the bottom.

Usually a good swimmer, she panicked, her arms flailing as she struggled for the surface. Her legs tangled in the long skirt, forcing her arms to do all the work. By the time she reached air, her lungs burned, her arms strained and she couldn't decide whether she was more afraid of the panther or of drowning.

Struggling to tread water, while her dress pulled her downward, Catherine's gaze panned her immediate surroundings. The stretch of land where the panther paced the water's edge was closest, but out of the question. Other tiny islands lay much farther away. What looked like a log floating in the dark water could be a temporary reprieve until Catherine decided what to do. The log was almost as close as the panther and seemed to be moving her way.

Then the log blinked.

Catherine's blood ran cold, her arms and legs stopped fighting the water for a moment and she sank, water washing up her nose. She kicked upward, back-paddling toward the land, panther or no panther. She'd rather take her chances with a panther than an alligator.

One minute the alligator was there, the next he was gone.

Catherine glanced down at the murky water. Where'd he go? Dear God, he'd gone down, heading directly for her. She turned and swam as fast as she could, straight for land, the black panther and assuredly death.

Five feet from shore, she could taste her salvation. She'd make dry ground and then have to fight off the panther. At least she could breathe on land.

Just a few more feet. Her arms ached, her feet barely helped so hampered by the skirt of her long gown, but Catherine pushed on.

Then long, sharp teeth scraped across her skin, snagged her dress and yanked her backward and underwater. Her chest clenched.

Seconds later, a large splash landed next to her.

She couldn't see anything. Murky, nasty swamp water filled her mouth and lungs, and blinded her eyes. Catherine fought like a mad woman to get away from an angry alligator with a mouth full of fabric. She prayed he got as tangled in the folds as she'd been and leave her flesh alone.

If she wanted to live, she had to lose the dress and get out of water. Lungs burning with the need for air, Catherine slipped the straps off her shoulders and tore at the waistline, fumbling fingers struggling to find the zipper.

Long sharp claws slashed through the layers, digging into her skin.

A stab of pain barely registered as her dress floated free of her body. Catherine kicked hard, pushing upward to surface. She breached, gasping, coughing and sucking a lungful of air into her body.

Without wasting time, she stroked hard for shore, dragging her body up the muddy banks. The panther was nowhere to be seen. Once her feet and body were safely out of the swamp, she pushed to her knees and glanced back as the water churned.

A black blur surfaced on top of the alligator's back as the reptile rolled his huge body.

Another splash captured her attention and Catherine turned toward the house on the edge of the swamp. Luc swam toward the fray, a knife between his teeth, his arms and legs propelling him forward with the speed of an Olympic athlete.

Her heart banging against the walls of her chest, Catherine cried out.

The alligator and the panther disappeared beneath the surface.

Luc yanked the knife from his mouth and dove after the pair.

After replenishing her life force, Ella returned to the boat house to climb back into the oversized shorts and t-shirt she’d borrowed from a stranger’s clothesline earlier that morning. Even though she hated to take things that didn’t belong to her, she couldn’t very well walk around town naked.

Once dressed she made her way back to the private dock, to await the handsome man from her past. Nervousness invaded her stomach when she finally spotted him coming her way, returning to his ocean-side cottage after a long, hard swim out to sea. Her mind raced with questions while her skin prickled with uneasy anticipation.

Would he recognize her after all this time?

Steeling herself she stood back and observed him as he gripped the dock and lifted his long lean torso from the sea. Water dripped from his magnificent body and when his glistening eyes locked on hers, she sucked in a sharp breath, the pull between them every bit as powerful today as it was all those years ago. Ella watched him and waited, anxious to see how he’d react to her.

He slowly climbed to his feet and when he reached his full height, towering a good foot over her, his brow furrowed in bewilderment, clearly taken aback to find someone on his dock.

Surprise on his face, he reached for his clothes. “How…who?”

“It’s been too long,” Ella murmured under her breath as she gazed at his nakedness. It made her want to shed her own clothes, to return to her natural form.

With his hand hovering over his pants, confusion clouded his eyes and he glanced at the distant houses dotting the dark cove. “Do I know—” then suddenly, before he even completed his sentence, his head spun back to her, his clothes forgotten as awareness dawned on his face.

Ella held her breath and waited.

He stood up, his gaze darting to her legs. At first surprise registered in his eyes—then perhaps a bit of disappointment when he glimpsed her land legs instead of her sea tail—but then…well…then something else seemed to take possession of him. As a very sexual being herself, Ella knew exactly what that something else was. Desire.

Instead of going for his clothes, his eyes leisurely trailed upward again, visually caressing her body in a way that made her tremble. She could feel his heat reaching out to her, caressing her and pulling her under like a warm, rogue wave.

“It’s you,” he whispered, his voice husky from both desire and amazement. “Jesus, it’s really you.”

She realized she wanted him to remember her, wanted him to reminisce about their time together after she disappeared beneath the sea, the same way she would think about every moment of this stolen night, when she was locked in a loveless marriage.

A low tortured noise sounded in his throat and pain haunted his eyes when he asked, “Where have you been?”

Ella took a tentative step closer, craving so much from this man. “All that matters is that I’m here now.”

His gaze moved over her face, assessing her. “I’ve been looking for you,” he murmured and she didn’t miss the tremor in his voice, the undeniable need lacing his words when he added, “I’ve been searching for so long now.”

Desperate to know more—everything—about him, she rushed out, “What’s your name?”

“Liam. Liam Jackson.”

“Liam,” Ella repeated thinking it was the most beautiful name she’d ever heard. “I’m Ella.”

His smile was slow, shaky when he admitted, “I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you, Ella.” Just hearing him say her name for the first time and knowing he’d been thinking about her all these years filled her with a new kind of want.

“I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you either,” she admitted honestly and as her body beckoned his touch, she placed her hand on his shoulder in a means to hurry along the intimacy. She wanted him, had needed him for so long now that she didn’t want to waste one more glorious second of the night.

He stroked her arm and she shivered beneath his touch, the strange bond between them tremendous, even after all this time. “I never had the chance to thank you.”

Ella smiled, “Seeing you alive and here today is thanks enough.”

His brows furrowed and conflicting emotions passed over his eyes. “What took you so long to come back?”

Ella frowned, unsure of what to say. How could she tell him that meeting him like this was forbidden, and that after tonight, after she wiped his memory—something she should have done fifteen years ago, yet couldn’t seem to bring herself to do—he’d never remember her again?

He stepped back to examine her, his gaze heartily drinking her in. She could tell by the look on his face that he was still shocked to find her standing on his dock.

“You’re just as beautiful as I remember,” he whispered and everything in the way he studied her promised of something far more intimate. “Except now you’re all grown up.”

His beauty took her breath away and there was nothing she could do to stop her body from quaking, but she knew she wasn’t just reacting to him physically. Even though it wasn’t logical, and they were from diverse worlds, she wanted this man on a whole different level.

Her breath grew shallow as she looked at his nakedness. “So are you.”

He studied her face and suddenly seemed unsure. She could almost hear the wheels spinning as his mind raced with unanswered questions. “That day, that day you saved me, you took off before I had a chance—” She touched her fingertip to his mouth to silence him.

“Shhh…”

He closed his mouth, instantly understanding now was not the time for questions.

Another shiver moved through her and he must have mistaken it for something else. He stepped closer and gathered her into his arms like it was the most natural thing for him to do. Her body molded into his and she felt his blatant need as his cock pressed against her stomach.

Off in the distance the sound of laughter broke the silence of the night. Even though they were draped in darkness on his dock, hidden from probing eyes, it was still a reminder that they weren’t really alone. Without concealing his erection, Liam stepped back and gathered her hand into his.

His gaze panned her face, searching for answers and the intent look in his eyes spoke of such need and desire it made her insides quiver. “Can you stay?”

“For a little while,” she answered. “But then I—”

Catherine Boudreaux slid into the back seat of the limousine, dead tired and sick of all the push and shove of a night out in New Orleans.

James Roland, her so-called date, dropped in next to her, slobbering drunk, with hands and arms like a freakin' octopus. Even before the chauffeur closed the door, James's fingers ran over her body, slipping beneath her dress straps to pinch her breasts.

Sharp pain pierced her nipples. "James, no." She pushed him away only to have him slide back, pressing her down against the leather seat.

"Come on, baby, you know you want some of this." He rubbed hard ridge beneath his fly against her thigh, while sticking a wet, disgusting tongue into her ear.

The man worked out. He had a nice body, but he was arrogant, obsessive and annoying. Not to mention, he was stronger than she was and using that strength to his advantage.

"What part of no did you not understand?" she asked, struggling to stay ahead of his groping.

"Your lips are saying no, but your body is telling me yes."

"I don't know what translation you're using, but you've got it all wrong." She shoved both hands hard against his chest. "Let me up now, or I'll have to get violent."

"Yeah, baby, I love it when you talk tough." His fingers squeezed harder on her nipple and his tongue dug deeper into her ear.

Her body stiffened. Catherine only wanted to go home and sleep off a migraine quickly growing in proportion to the amount of gymnastics she performed to evade James.

"Come on, let's do it here." James ground his pelvis against hers, his head descending to claim her lips.

Catherine turned her face from his kiss, his wet lips sliming her cheek. "I'm not in the mood."

"Come on, don't you want to celebrate your purchase?"

"I'll celebrate in a bubble bath." Which sounded sadly more interesting than James.

His hands slithered down her body, cupping her pussy through the thin fabric of her dress. "That sounds like fun."

"Alone." Catherine slapped away his hand.

"You worked hard to acquire that tract of swamp land, imagine all the oil you can pump out of it." He shivered. "I get chills just thinking of all that money you'll add to your family fortune."

"Yeah. So what's that got to do with pawing me?" She planted a palm against his forehead and leveraged away his face.

"You and me, we're made for each other. I can help you invest all that lovely cash in the stock market. You'll be even richer."

Invest? Catherine went still beneath James. "Is that why you asked me out? You want to manage my money?"

"Hell, yeah." He planted a slobbery kiss against her chin, reeking of scotch. "Who wouldn't want to?"

Catherine sucked in a deep breath and let it out slowly. Why did she think this would be any different? James was handsome, well-built and...just like every other man she'd met since she'd inherited her grandfather's billions. They all wanted only one part of her—the part that included her bank account.

She fumbled for the intercom button on the door and jabbed it.

James shoved a hand into the slit of her skirt, his fingers hooking the elastic of her panties, ripping them over her hips.

The window behind the driver's seat slid downward. "Yes, Miss Boudreaux?"

"Stop the car," she demanded, straining against James’s weight.

"Hey, shut the damned window," James shouted, flinging his shoe at the driver. "We're about to do some serious fucking."

"Like hell we are." Catherine brought up her knee sharply between James's legs, hitting his sweet spot with as much force as she could leverage. "Just in case you didn't get the message, I said no."

James screamed like a girl and fell over onto the floor, clutching his crotch.

In the middle of New Orleans traffic, the vehicle screeched to a halt. The chauffeur, dressed in a black suit with a crisp white shirt, black tie and mirrored sunglasses, opened the back door.

Catherine sat up quickly, straightening her dress to cover her naked breasts. "Etienne, please escort this gentleman to the curb."

"Etienne had a family emergency and wasn't able to perform the remainder of his driving duties tonight," the chauffeur announced. "I'm his replacement, Lucien."

"Whatever," Catherine waved a hand. "Get this man out of here."

With a groan, James grabbed for her calf. "Catherine, don't play hard to get. I was only teasing."

"Get out, James." She kicked at his hand, her high heel connecting with the man's cheekbone, leaving a long, jagged scratch.

James grabbed his face. "Bitch." When he reached for her again, Lucien yanked the offensive man by his feet, dragging him from the limousine and onto the sidewalk. Once James was outside the vehicle, the chauffeur assisted the man to his feet, and dusted him off, with a great deal of civility, even retrieving the shoe James had flung.

Then Lucien closed the car door.

Catherine punched the lock button as James lunged for the door handle. He yanked on it and then pounded both fists against the window. "Catherine Boudreaux, you'll pay for this!"

She leaned back against the seat, rubbing her fingers over her sore nipples, feeling like she'd already paid for it. Her hand fell to her side landing on a soft fabric pouch. Had it fallen out of James's pocket? Catherine switched on a reading light and studied the object. If she wasn't mistaken, this was a gris gris pouch, the kind the Voodoo shops sold by the thousands to gullible tourists.

What was James doing with it? Trying to weave a little love spell?

Catherine snorted. Not happening. She rolled down the window, about to throw the pouch at James.

Before the window slid down, the limo pulled out into traffic. "Are you all right, Miss Boudreaux?" Lucien called through the open dividing glass.

She stared into the rearview mirror, expecting the mirrored sunglasses, instead she fell into the driver's deep gold eyes reflecting back at her. He had black hair and equally black brows, his skin swarthy and tanned.

Yum. Something primal stirred deep in Catherine's body.

"Where to, ma'am?"

With the gris gris clenched in her hand, her head pounding as if natives beat tom toms in rhythm with her pulse, Catherine's eyes blurred and she dragged her gaze from the handsome driver. Her head fell back against the seat. "I don't care...take me away."

"Anywhere in particular?" he asked.

"An island out in the middle of nowhere." She closed her eyes, willing the pain to ease from her temples. "Someplace where people like that creep James can't find me would be nice."

"I know just the spot," the chauffeur murmured.

Sunday Report Card - Nov 6

Another successful week. Not quite done with the second book in my Ugly Stick Saloon series for Samhain, but I hope to put some more words down today. This will be the Gray Wolf twins and Libby's story. I finished my Harlequin Intrigue (Elle James pen name) the previous week in a 3-week marathon of butt-in-chair-hands-on-keys seriousness. I think I'm still reeling from that so the 15,000 words I wrote this week seemed kind of anti-climatic next to the 25-26000 words I was pounding out the weeks before.

I spent all day Friday putting my next indie-published book up on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, ARe and Smashwords. What a chore, but it's got a beautiful cover and the story was a lot of fun to write. If you like hot Cajun shapeshifters and a little Voodoo in your life, check it out!

Spent this morning printing and cutting out lego invitations and faces for my grandson's 7th birthday. Will get those in the mail to my daughter ASAP. He'll have birthday party in the early part of December since his birthday is too close to Christmas to get friends to come. His mamma was the same way. Birthday got lumped with Christmas all too often with birthday gifts wrapped in Christmas paper. I know, I'm a bad parent. I didn't do that often. I tried very hard to be sure to wrap in Birthday paper.

This coming week I hope to write the fifth in the Dirty Tricks Series. For those following Charli's adventures, you'll love this...it's going to be free! It'll be a short story that will set me up for the 6th and final story in the series. I've loved following Charli, she's been having the time of her life in Temptation, Texas, with all those cowboys, especially with Mason and her Original Sin. Yum!
